My team "solved" this issue with me (captain) outfitting with flat pedals and regular shoes. It was first an experiment to induce me to dial back my 90 rpm cadence. We learned that 90 was too fast, ironically, while test riding a DaVinci. Stoker was literally chasing me any time I got to spinning. Epiphany. Going to flats improved our travel speed and efficiency immediately. Now I don't ever use secured shoe-pedal interface in our tandems and don't miss it whatsoever. Still use SPDs with my single bikes. The extra security with sure footing at stops is a big bonus.

I have used this method for years with both my children and now my grandchildren .Use this because concerned about kids being able to maintain high cadence rate. Use 42 and 38 chain rings. Once you get use to being out of sync no big deal. Not sure how it would work with adults.
