Gotta say I’m not terribly impressed with Jenson right now. I went to setup the levers and discovered the bars are crushed on both ends. They obviously didn’t use a torque wrench. They’re sending me another bar at no cost which is good, but this shouldn’t have happened in the first place

If it were me, I would be going through the rest of that bike with a fine tooth comb...If they can't get a bar install right, I'd be even more suspect of their other work...

I went over everything yesterday put on a temporary set of alloy bars. The stock bars were also crushed at the stem clamp, though not a deep as the brake levers and no carbon assembly compound was used. It shifted like a turd, but was easily fixed and could have happened during shipping.

Glad it’s all good. Had that been a road bike, the could have damages the carbon steerer tube with their ham fists...

That's not uncommon. I just put a new shifter on my bike a few weeks ago and my carbon bars look the same. And that's with me using a 5 Nm torque tool. I wouldn't be too discouraged about it.

Just my opinion, but 5nm for your levers is much too high. In the event of a crash the levers will not rotate when torqued that high. I would use 3-4nm max. Just enough so they don't move under regular load. They're not supporting weight like a roadie on the hoods.

I’ve had a few mail order bikes now and they’re pretty much assembled when they arrive from overseas, short of installing the front tire and stem. How sure are you Jenson is responsible?

When I received the bike from Jenson, it included a checklist that was filled out by the mechanic that built the bike as well as the person who carried out the QA inspection. I also doubt that Kona would be sending out their flagship bike in this condition from the factory.

I managed to get out for three rides this long weekend and put down almost 100km on flowing trails and a bike park. I'm in absolute love with this bike and for the first time ever my derriere and an OE saddle can coexist comfortably. This bike has 10mm less travel than my Giant, but I didn't notice it at all or feel that I was lacking travel. The less slack head tube angle took a bit of getting used to but I never felt like I was undergunned on big descents.

I wasn't sure how I felt about the sram xx1 but I got used to it very quickly, I do wish sram had the ability to upshift two gears with one push like Shimano. The guide ultimate brakes felt really spongy and there was too much unnecessary modulation. With the contact point adjustment I was able to make them a bit more grippy like I'm used to, but I do prefer the lever feel and texture of the m8000 lever over the guide ultimate.

I was having a problem with the chain skipping in the fourth largest cog and read that sram includes a b tension adjustment tool to set your gap. I didn't get one with the bike. 30 minutes on the 3d printer and that gear now runs clean.

If you think the clamps messed up your bar now, take a look at them after they slip on your bar.

I'm okay with the scratches, dings and marks that I put on my bike while riding, they all tell a story. I can't accept marks that like that on my bike before I've have a chance to hit the trails. What made it worse is the levers weren't in a location that suited me so the crush marks wouldn't have been hidden by the clamp.

I still haven't received the replacement bars from Jenson, going to have to contact them today and see what's up.

So, you are OK riding a compromised bar as long as you did the damage yourself? The scoring cause by a clamp in this case is exactly the kind of damage (along with crushing) you need to be wary of with a CF bar.

My point was not to excuse the crush marks on the bar, but to suggest that intentionally leaving the clamp loose enough to slip on a CF bar might not be such a good idea.

Just my opinion FWIW.
