Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

replacing speedplay cleats

i'm still only on my first set of cleats for my zeros. for those of you who have replaced your cleats, did you replace them when you began feeling play in the cleat, as in your foot could rock side to side? (and i don't mean the twist of the float). And if that wasn't it, what are some signs that i should be watching for that my cleats are worn enough to need a new set.

I replace mine when they feel a little sloppy, or when the screw heads start to get worn down enough that if I wait any longer I won't be able to get them off...

I recently started putting Shoe Goo over the screws so that the cleats grip the road better when I put my foot down. This was recommended by Speedplay because I almost went down once when the road was wet and slippery.

It works very well, makes the shoes easier to walk in and should extend the life the cleats as the metal will not wear down as fast.

Great idea. I never would have thought of that. Thanks.

The next time I need to but Shoe Goo on my cleats, I will probably just put it just on the metal surface between the screws. This makes it easy to remove the cleats. The way I have it now, I will need to grind the Shoe Goo off of the cleats which won't really be a big deal. Shoe Goo dry into a fairly hard rubber which makes the shoes grip very well.

I replace mine when they start rocking enough to bug me and they usually start clicking because they have so much slop, my cleats usually last around 4000-4500 miles.

I'm more of a procrastinater. I often wait to the point you need to cut a slot for the screwdriver with a dremel tool.

Then again I may not be the best to opine on speedplay cleat maintainence.

To try and preserve a podium spot in a stage race.

I've been experimenting with LeWedge shims on my Speedplay's, and I found that I needed 4Mx12's instead of the stock 4Mx10's that come with the cleats. I found that Mcmaster-Carr sells 50 for $6.58 plus shipping. I grabbed a bag of each, so I can change the screws as they wear down a bit without waiting till they're unremovable. I usually wait to replace the cleat until the spring shows a decent amount of flattening.

Find a shop that sells them. All the online sources charge close to or at msrp, then you add shipping, and have to wait for them to be delivered. Makes no sense.

For me, 4000 miles on a set of cleats is pushing it.
