Can I replace an ST-EF29-7 shifter with an ST-EF51?

My shifter on my Trek is falling apart, can I replace the right side 7 speed ST-EF29-7 that came with the bike with an ST-EF51?

I'd post pictures of the bike and shifter but I'm new and can't include links/photos until I have 10 points, lol.

Yes, if it's another 7 speed. An 8 speed approximately works too. If you are only buying one side make sure it's the correct side.

Be mindful of brake caliper type. The EF51 is usually for linear pull brakes only, though types do exist that will also work with short pull brakes, like cantilevers. If your bike has linear pull brakes (also called V brakes by Shimano), then you should be good to go. If you have another type of brake, then you would need to find the dual pull model of the EF51.

EF-65 has a dual pull model (4 finger, not 2 finger) for both V & Cantilever.

You need the "4 Finger" version. (IF you have Canti brakes)
It will have a 4 in the suffix instead of a 2 (or nothing).

All the info about the old shifter I can find, it's for V brakes and usually has short levers. But it's good to check.

Mine is labeled "V Brake" so I'm good to go. Thanks.
