I never rode one but raced as a junior against a few folks who rode them . I wanted to try it but was also scared about the squirrelly handling. Also, the split down tube with only the Gian Roberts front derailleur being compatible makes restoring one a bit difficult.

They are interesting bikes. I never got the OEM fork for the one I had but it rode OK with this basic Tange fork. It took a lot of concentration the first few times you ride and if you don't ride it often it can surprise you

The real wheel is really close

This FD mounting is really really unusual. Even that funky Peugeot one isn't the same

There is no mistaken what brand it is

Cool pics! Thanks for posting. Real life examples and experience always add much value to these old articles.

@Bianchigirll- the hole in the seat tube above the front derailleur is of concern. Might you get a frame builder to repair it or is the Rigi for display only now? The is one locally in Louisville, KY but haven't had contact with the owner in years. Rigi framesets are neat and intriguing!

I think that is just a chip in the paint. I passed it along a few years ago.

I was just gifted a Rigi frame and fork. It’s my size and includes the front Gian Roberts derailleur and adapter too. Unfortunately, it has had all of the cable guides and braze on’s cut off, maybe intended for a single speed. I can’t justify the cost of repairing and repainting the frame. Bummer, it’s a cool, unique frame.

It might still make a fun project, though maybe not so much fun to actually ride.

I've got a RIGI now, in my size, but what is holding me back is the incorrect CAMPAG front derailer cage and links that were kluged onto the original body.
I suspect maybe the now-elderly original owner wanted it all-Campy, but it sits at the wrong angle to clear the chain unless the lever is trimmed after every second shift!

I took an hours-long trip to buy this bike and would love to find the correct-model original Gian Robert front derailer.
