From the article -- "She is behind a push to scrap the word 'cyclist' and replace it with the term 'people who ride bikes'." Um... ok. Good luck with that.

Oh boy! File this under "I" for Idiot.
This is yet another example of some neurotic politically correct fool from academia (if you can imagine that ) who thinks that by changing a few words in the English language you can turn the world into a utopian paradise. Not gonna happen.
Isn't a Sanitation Engineer still a garbage man when it comes down to it?

I'm proud to be called a cyclist, but Serious Cyclist™ would be better.

This is a great idea (not really)!!! Also, from now on runners will be referred to a "people who run." Drivers will be referred to as "people who drive cars." Airplane pilots will be referred to as "people who fly airplanes." And people that come up with stupid ideas like this will be called "people who are stupid."

Thinking of it, I wouldn't be against calling some "people who ride e-bikes".

I felt dehumanized when someone called me a bald geezer. I'd prefer senior citizen with different hair abilities.

Well this stinks. First I'm not good enough to be a Serious Cyclist, soon I won't even be a plain old regular one.

"Scientist" is a derogatory, demeaning term (thanks to people like this.) We should call them "people who are thicker than bricks."

Ok, I see that many people I respect from many of their other replies on other threads are having fun with this. That is too bad. being a "cyclist" for getting close to 50 years not even counting my pre adolescent cycling, I would expect better

Ok hahaha. Let’s get the laughing out of the way.
It’s not a secret that there’s a serious schism between cyclists and drivers. Lots of people are deliberately aggressive towards bicyclists and an alarming number are unsympathetic towards them. I’m not exactly sure that calling us cyclists *causes* this us vs them mentality, but cognitively speaking, it is tougher to set us up as an outsider group if we don’t have a label like “cyclists”. Wearing a helmet and glasses also significantly reduce the amount of consideration people give you on the road, because you look less like a normal person.
”Dehumanizing” is probably not the best word to use though.
