So we heard from the last college for daughter #2 . She got accepted at NYU. Her 3 top choices are USC, NYU, and Temple.
No way she is going to USC. It's too far away and very expensive. I know it has the #1 program for her current intended major (Film) in the whole effing country, but that's just not happening based on her maturity and other issues. If she shows some maturity she possibly could transfer there after 1 or 2 years closer to home.
NYU is possible, but TBH the cost of NYU (after the modest scholarship they gave her) will cost about 6x the cost of Temple (which has offered her free tuition for 4 years, we just pay expenses).
We are going to have a big fight on our hands, and I don't look forward to it. There will be more drama to come.

I don't envy you. I also have quite a bit of sympathy for her, especially since some part of her will probably see your point.

It's tough. She is VERY 18 and does not understand that good opportunities for her are everywhere, and the cost>>value for NYU. I even told her that in retrospect, I would have done well to have gone to Rutgers (with most of my classmates) rather than Johns Hopkins for undergrad, and that's when the gap between state and private college costs was not so wide. She does not get it.
That said, she is her mother's daughter (very stubborn and determined) so if I had to make a prediction, I expect she will dig in her heels and we will acquiesce, with certain conditions, to let her go there.

If you think that these maybe be significant factors, I'd explore ways of addressing them, appealing to her emotionally. Maybe find out what notable film makers went through Temple and/or Philly in general (I don't think that a Rocky marathon is going to do it, though) and explore their work? And then maybe plant seeds with regards to the autonomy she'd have, even though she wouldn't be that far from home? (Would she be living on campus?)

One piece of advice from an old negotiator is that if you think you're going to give in anyway, it's worth cutting your losses and truncating the conflict phase. Instead, make your personal displeasure (in first person terms), your reasons, and your conditions for assent, clear at or near the beginning of the discussion. That shifts the moral burden onto her and you'll come out of it with advantages you wouldn't have if she "wins" a protracted fight on what she perceives as the merits of the question.

To a point. The LandShark is generally in the Super Competition class, which has an 8.90 breakout. That means you can't go quicker than that time. The difference in that rail compared to others, is the wheelbase. Those are around 200 inches, give or take a foot or two, either way, compared to the full sized jobbies, that carry the full 300 inches. Trailering them, and storing them is the upside, along with maneuverability around the pits. The pro classes get all the help and space they need in the pits, and the sportsmen classes get the dirt and the cheap seats.

I thought I wanted to go as far away as possible for college and did...for a year. After which I transferred to a better school closer to home.
