Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I've used Surly with great results. Since last year, I have been on a Wabi Cycles cogs (whoever makes them) and they've been great as well. They're much cheaper, so that's where I'll be getting all of my future cogs from. They've got a 18/16 dingle option as well.

I have a Soma 22t, works fine, the chrome finish has chipped, but I have put it through abhorrent conditions... and I still use it.

Recently picked up a EAI 19T (running 48-19, which i love) very nice quality.

Recently I've only used PW cogs with PW and Campagnolo Pista Record hubs, Campagnolo Pista Record chainrings and D.I.D. Racing Pro chains. Most people I know swear by EAI cogs though. However, EAI (and Surly) cogs are not recommended with PW hubs. Not sure to what extend specifically "matching" your drivetrain really matters, but it could be something to consider. I'm sure someone on here can lecture on the subject.

I know plenty of people using EAI cogs on Phil hubs and I've done it myself without any trouble at all.

I really can't see why it would matter at all, since the cog threading is the same, right ? AFAIK, the only thing that is different is the lockring.

It's because they're a little thicker than most other cogs, causing less lockring threads to be engaged (and people to panic unnecessarily).

Have never actually used EAI with PW hubs, I was merely going by their recommendation. I'll count your experience higher any day.

A lot of people freak out about it on the interwebz. The difference in thickness between a Phil cog and and EAI cog is literally less than 1 mm.

In order to calculate skid patches for a given gear combo simplify the gear combo (48/16) to the smallest equivalent whole number ratio which would be 3/1 so a 48/16 gear ratio will have 1 skid patch and you will wear out your tire really quickly. Personally, I would run a 17 or 19 primarily to avoid this problem.

Or you could just use a simple gear inch calculator.

I know at this point, this might be off topic, but I've really liked my Milwaukee Bicycle Co. cog, and it's made in the USA.

Also, this might be my first post here in like 2 years.

I've got a Soma on right now, and it's fairly quiet too. But if you want silence, EAI.
