1983 Trek 720?
Last night I picked up a junked partial bike from our local free FB page. It is in ghastly shape with probably the very worst spray paint job ever, did not even take off the components. However, it is a Trek frame with cantilever brakes and front fork rack braze ons . The serial number is 108492. Which according to vintage-trek.com makes it a 1983 620. Did they make 620's with cantilevers and front braze ons? I guess it could be a replacement fork. Hoping it might be a 720.

Assuming you will remove the worst-ever paint, check for Reynolds marking on bare steel near the top of the blades. You can also look at the forks' rack bosses and see if they look like factory quality brazing once the paint is off. The 720 also had a longer chain stay than the 620- 47cm vs. 44cm, for 22.5" frame size, per brochure. These things could be helpful in verifying the model of frame and fork vs. the s/n decoder.

The serial number for old Treks is the gold medal standard. So if this is a 1983 Trek 620, those were likely brazed on afterwards which may explain that ghastly paint job. The 1983 620 did not have cantilever brakes.
