I don't wear cycling shorts to protect me from my bike!!!! I wear them because: they are WAY more comfortable to ride in than anything else. Doesn't matter what you're sitting on. For one thing: they manage sweat WAY WAY better...when I first started riding, I rode in my street cloths. And once I started to sweat, I began to itch, and it was a drag. I wore street cloths for a year or two...I vividly recall the first day I wore cycling shorts. Feeling silly.
Went out my drive way, and by the time I was fifty yards from my house I had to ask myself: WHY THE HELL DIDN'T I DO THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE. Much better freedom of movement, nothign that interferes with how you move, way way way less problems with sweat.

Who (whom?) has cotton killed?

I agree that other fabrics are better for some activities, but somehow cotton has become a hazardous material. How did we all survive before “performance gear” arrived. When I was young, I rode many miles in cotton shorts, shirts and yes, cotton briefs.

Thousands of cyclists have died form wearing cotton before the so-called technical fabrics were invented ….I've worn cotton many times, it does get uncomfortable when wet and takes long time to dry but I am still alive....I do prefer technical fabrics but I am not against wearing cotton sometimes....Most cyclist don't ride in remote areas and extreme conditions long enough to risk hypothermia form wearing wrong choice of clothing. I am more concerned about distracted drivers then dying form hypothermia during my commute to/from work.

BTW, whenever I’m in other countries, especially places like Amsterdam, I am struck by how few people wear Spandex or other miracle fabrics while riding.

Having said all that, I wear wicking synthetic underwear, only because that’s what I wear all the time. And I will certainly agree that it’s more comfortable than cotton—but I don’t think it’s saving my life. I would like to try merino wool undies, but my Ex-Officio stuff doesn’t wear out.

True, but it also says "100 lbs.". BTW, cotton underpants will cause deep cuts on both sides of one's crotch, leading to death. I personally like the puffiest chamois I can buy. YMMV.

Even on my 'bents, my first choice is regular bike shorts with a pad. The pad is the underwear and it provides chafing protection and sweat control. My second choice is unpadded lycra shorts with lycra boxer-style underwear. Again, for protection against chafing. Cotton retains moisture and chafes the worst of any fabric choice. Plus 'whitey tighteys' have a rolled hem right in the corners where it can do the most damage.

best thing i've done for my riding - almost ever!

You seem to be stuck in the past. Quit clinging to a bike type that was invented in the 19th century.

What is the hate for cotton. My cotton whitey tighties give me no problems at all. But then I ride bents and trikes.

Bike shorts with dead sheep skins that have greasy kids stuff on them is yuck.

Not thousands, but I've heard of several cases where cotton-clad cyclists died of embarrassment.

I've never had cuts, but the abrasion caused by the elastic can be agonizing.

I've recently begun experimenting with going commando, and I have to say, it's so much more comfortable on my hard-as-a-plank Brooks. I don't have bike shorts, I have Target exercise capris (below the knee) and the flat seams and crotch gusset are actually quite comfortable, no abrasion. Hurrah!
