Just remember to tuck your jersey in your tighty whities like the pros do.

"I have to say, I envy you guys for having boxers. We women don't have that option; women's "boxers" have a 2" long leg, which is just stupid."

Wear men's boxers. The Ex Officio ones are good for riding (and all day every day).

Learned years ago. That the issue is how the seam of the shorts is made. Cycling shorts are sewn so that their is no thread seam on the inside of the shorts. So there is no rubbing of the seam with your skin. No need to ever wear underwear with cycling shorts. Haven’t for 39 years. Just make sure to watch how thin the shorts get. As your rear starts to show.

Material is one factor.

Seam placement is another.

I wore street cloths for a year or two...I vividly recall the first day I wore cycling shorts. Feeling silly.
Went out my drive way, and by the time I was fifty yards from my house I had to ask myself: WHY THE HELL DIDN'T I DO THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE. Much better freedom of movement, nothign that interferes with how you move, way way way less problems with sweat.
Back in the mid 80s when I was riding bikes a lot I really didn't want to wear spandex because I didn't like the way it looks. Not because I was fat, actually skinny but I have the type of personality that doesn't like to look the part. I also don't like to wear jerseys that have a lot of advertisements for high end tackle or a pro team. So I used touring shorts back then.

When I restarted cycling two years ago I had two pairs of mountain bike shorts from Nashbar. I got these during a "false start" back into cycling around 2005. I rode in a charity bike ride in July 2019 and someone took a few pictures of me with the mountain bike shorts on my road bike. Looking at the pictures I decided I didn't like the way I look in those either. But I never felt that I was all that good riding a road bike until this year when I sheepishly set out with my first pair of spandex road shorts. I now have 6 pairs of said shorts.

Merino definitely fits the bill, but its also very expensive, 1 pair of trunks is the cost of 4 or more regular trunks.
Synthetics are fine, but the smell factor is a real issue
Does anyone have any suggestions that are genuinely better than the regular cotton underwear?
I'm sorry, but we don't call them trunks anymore, that was about 50 years ago. Grown men asking other grown men what type of underwear they wear while bicycling?
It's a bit too.......

I'm sorry for your predicament of being made feel insecure and uncomfortable about a question regarding sports clothing thst covers our genetials, but not so uncomfortable to waste time giving out about it.

I wish I didn't force you to read the thread, o wait.....

FYI - They're called trunks in most stores here. Briefs, boxers and trunks are usually available.

No different than asking what type of cycling shorts one wears. This is the 1700s. The topic of underwear is not unmentionable. See what I did there?

...and wearing underwear while riding a bicycle is a dopey notion. Compression shorts, maybe. Nothing at all, more common. Undies? Why?

I wear underwear for my short commute to work. No sense donning cycling-specific clothing for a two mile ride. Also wear it for things like trips to the grocery store and happy hour at my local.

^ right. And I do the same when tooling around the neighborhood to simply test ride a bike I'm building or repairing. The OP really didn't qualify, so I expect that he's talking about general recreational riding as opposed to task-specific utility rides like short commutes or runs to the ABC store.

EDIT: Just as the fellow in the recumbent says, "I wear short basketball shorts from the 1960s with my Jockeys underneath..." or some such.

Andiamo lightly padded underwear is made to be worn under regular clothing. A few in our group (including me) use them under regular shorts and have found them to be just enough to make the ride more enjoyable (combined with a decent saddle). https://andiamounderwear.com/

Not unless you enjoy all the chafing. When I'm working outside in the heat of the summer and high humidity I have to wear wicking nylon underwear, otherwise it gets to be miserable.
