Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

52/40 for this oldster. And 12/25. On the most commonly ridden bike. One of the others bears a corncob of unknown heritage. The third one is rarely ridden, but I should check just to know what's what.

My bitd setup was 53/42F and 13-21R. Used it until 11 years ago. Now I have no guilt about running 50/34F and 12-28R.

Use whatever gearing suits your situation.

I'm thinking about wussening the big and middle rings on the Lemond. Currently 52/42/26, considering 48 big
undecided about mid: 36, 38, 40???

I might have a 5 bolt 38 around here. Guess I should do some rummaging at halftime

you don’t realize I’m stuck with watching them on Sunday afternoons as they are the local team, so if I’m forced to watch them I would at least like them to be entertaining to watch.

I don’t get into the big ring until I’m going 20 normally. 52/36 on the front, 11-30 on the back

That vibrant Jason Garrett offense? Headed by a branch of the Belichick tree, with all the success it's engendered outside of the 9th pit of Hell?

I resemble that remark. my commuters have "big" chainrings of 46 and 44. And i don't go use the small cogs on the cassette. Ok my m5 has a 52 front ring but it only has 20" wheels.

Paging vet neurologist Dr Heathpack can you help these people identify what critter the brain came from? It's not human.

There are many more details which could be discussed, but it boils down to my needs being diametrically opposed to yours. All I need is a comfortable bike and a motor. We are talking about different animals here.
Here ya go...

I often use all the gears, sometimes more than once, when I ride my bicycle.

Being the Large Economy Size, I use every gear, every ride. And wish for more. I assumed everybody did, till I rode with a woman the size of a bird, who was so unaffected by gravity that her speed hardly varied, and she didn't have to change gears much.

The Canyon's 36x34 is the first low gear I've ever had that I find too low on most climbs. Most, but not all.

Mission accomplished.

Very nice morning. Encountered numerous Amish in buggies and on foot heading to a house for worship. Got several greetings from those on foot.

Around 65 miles. Started at 6:55. Was at my local at 2:30 for a couple of hard ciders, fish tacos and to watch the Iggles lose.

Glad it went ok. There is a section of 23 there where cars zoom by at high speed. Too scary for me.

I'm sorry my lack of shifting has caused so much consternation in the group. But you can now see why I was shocked. SHOCKED. When I read that some of you are shifting hundreds of times on a similar length ride. On a normal ride it is the wind direction that makes the decision to shift or hold fast. And I shift into the big ring out on the road and into the small through the villages. I wish there was cause to shift more. Sadly there is not.

If Man weren't meant to shift early and often, why did Shimano give us all these gears?
