1980 Miyata 912 Shakedown
This has been on the back-burner for some time and I finally got it up and running and took it for a nice long ride today. The previous owner had "middle-aged" it, i.e., upright bars, cushy saddle, puffy tires and crudely drilled holes to accomodate schraeder valves. The original Shimano 600 EX (arabesque) components were all present but need to be overhaulled. Until then, I used some components that are in the same pay grade as the 912 frame.

It's very nimble. This is my second 912, the first was stolen in 1990 and I have been riding English road bikes since. Falcon, Holdsworth and Raleigh, they all feel great but I prefer the handling of the tighter frame geometry the 912 has. It has a much shorter top tube, wheel base and the head angle is 74*. I came across a very steep incline today and to my surprise, I was able to climb it without granny gears. This is a keeper for sure.

Looks good. I'd paint the flutes of the seatpost and crank arms/spider with black enamel and look for a "Miyata" down tube decal. I love my 912.

I was expecting the ride to be somewhat harsh due to the tight frame but the Continentals softened the blow considerably...

I looked through late 1970's and early 1980's Miyata catalogs to pin down the date, 1980 was the last year they used Tange tubing. In 1981, the 912 had "Miyata" chro-mo double butted tubing.
