1980 Raleigh Super Course 12
Greetings - I have a 1980 Raleigh Super Course 12 in stock condition except for the bar end shifters. Its a rider, in road worthy condition, with a little over 3000 miles on the stock components and frame. This bike uses a Suntour 'Ultra-6 freewheel cluster and corresponding chain. Essentially, it offers a 6 rear cogs freewheel cog set that fits into a 120mm frame. My frame actually measures at 122 mm. It is a 13-28 cluster. Does anybody know of a replacement cluster and chain that will work with this bike? I can find some (very limited) NOS Suntour Products, but they are VERY expensive and I have not found anything in the 13-28 configuration. Any suggestions for a replacement cluster and chain would be appreciated. Thank-You!

Measure your rear spacing and the height of the current 6 speed FW and then check the height of what is for sale. Many times a 6 speed FW will work fine in place of 5 speed especially if you remove the dork disk but measure to be sure

Old Bike Craphound
Bicycle co-ops are the best place to source lower cost old freewheels - you can likely find an old 5 speed, and perhaps an Ultra 6, if the spacing you have absolutely needs them. Any 8 speed chain should work well with any of these options. My experience is that the old Suntour freewheels last much longer because they do not have the teeth ground and shaped to help with index shifting, so used examples are often in good shape. If the ratchet is stiff just put a few drops of Phil's Tenacious oil in the gap between the turning parts from the back (the spoke side, not the lug nut side) and turn the ratchet until that old click is back. As Sheldon Brown noted, this ratchet is the least important bearing on your bicycle because it only works when you are resting.
