Shimano now has 1x - the GRX line
This should be interesting.
Gravel/adventure is driving product development and Shimano is now in the 1x game.
The interrupter levers are cool.
Ultegra Di2 is RX815
Ultegra Mechanical is RX810
105 is RX600
Tiagra 10 speed is RX400

Does this mean we can FINALLY get a 40t cassette on a road bike without dealing with incompatibility between road and mtb components or do we need both the GRX shifters and GRX rear DR? (is the GRX rear DR compatible with ordinary road brifters ? - holding my breath)

Imagine how many "how to get lower gears" questions could be answered with "get a grx rear DR and a SLX 11-40 cassette", if the grx rear DR is compatible with ordinary 11 speed brifters :-)

I'm really glad they've done something clever here to distinguish their selves. Their 1x mountain bike offerings have been years behind the market.

42 tooth cassettes work with RX800 or 805 GS derailleurs today.
I'm running an XT 11-42 cassette with the RX805 GS derailleur right now. It uses a 1.85 mm spacer behind the cassette, B screw is flipped around and requires an entire 116 link chain. Front rings are 46/30. It shifts fine. Low gear is 19.5 inches.

I'm also using a 11-42 rear with a RX805 + RoadLink. Works great.
At the time it took some research and finagling to get my setup working. Now we can buy it out of the box.
I am interested in the compact front chain rings for my Page Mill / Mt. Hamilton climbs. I don't think that they are compatible with rest of the R8000 road drive chain. Bummer that.
Mighty tempting to buy the full drive chain and install it on one of my bikes. For research and science

Now that I've thought about it I think it would have been a lot easier if Shimano made their road levers work with their MTB derailleurs.
I suppose that is water under the bridge now.

But is it known if GRX is road spec, mtb spec or something new? Possibly GRX IS mtb spec and wont work with existing road components?

If those cassette cogs keep getting bigger I see applications in the TT and Triathlon markets. No need to get an aero disc rear wheel when the huge @ss cogs will do the same job.

I've seen a drop bar bike with XT rear derailleur and cassette using TRP Hylex Di2 adapters.
We will find out what works with what when Shimano updates the compatibility chart.
The latest is Oct 2018.

1x and 2x crank options, including a GRX-specific front derailleur.

Incorrect. There are front derailleurs and FD options.
