Shimano Ultegra rear derailleur not shifting full range
Hi - i've messed up my Shimano Ultegra 6700 (10 speed) rear derailleur and now it will not shift thru the full range of 10 gears. I can get it to shift through about 6 - 7 of the high end or low end, but not the full range of gears, but have not been able to figure out why it won't cover all 10 gears. Maybe in the shifter? Any advice would be appreciated so that I can get back on the road with full range of gearing! thanks!

There are several good video tutorials on you-tube, I've consulted them numerous times. Calvin at Park Tools is always very knowledgeable.....
This guy does a real good job explaining it, too......

Did you turn the limit screws? Also be sure the hanger is straight before adjusting anything.
You can easily check the separate components (RD, cable, shifter) in the stand by shifting into low gear, stop pedaling, shift into high, then you should be able to pop a cable housing out of a frame stop. Then you can manually move the RD while pedaling, and you can check the shifter and cable separately. If you can't do the above, loosen the pinch bolt at the RD and remove the cable and start from scratch. (There are plenty of videos to show how to do this.)

Upon further examination i've discovered that the cable was fraying in the cable housing up near the shifter and handle bars. So, I'll now be replacing the cable and should be good after that. We'll see!

Those were notorious for that. I had that happen mid way through a century. The last 30 miles I only had 3 gears.

You are extremely lucky that you found it before the cable head broke off inside the shifter, it is an awful job to get them out. Check for fraying routinely and certainly when any unexpected change in shifting occurs.

thanks, everyone, lots of good advice! In addition to replacing the rear derailleur cable I'll be replacing all other cables, cable housings and handlebar tape! Seems to be the way to go - get it all done now and don't worry about it for a few years!! I'll miss a few days of riding while parts arrive, but should be ready to roll again tuesday!

Folks resort to drilling holes and all sorts of mess. The proper way to do it is to partially disassemble the shifter, which is a bit of a mission... There's a link in my tag (you might need to look at the desktop version of the site to see it), look for the easy method of overhaul.

...and you can easily and routinely inspect the cable with the procedure I mentioned in post #3 above. With no tension on the cable, you can push it out through the installation hole in the shifter. No need to disconnect the cable from the derailleur and readjust.
