Put my bike together again

Hello, I have just joined.

Not experienced in this but I want to put new brakes and new derailleur gears on my sports, (not very pricey) bike. I took the gears and brakes off after an accident and not sure where to start.

Do I put the brakes or gears on first? Does it matter?

I would like some general helpful advice and hope youcanhelp.

Greetings

Unless you want another accident, brakes are infinitely more important than shifting gears, so I always start there. If I can't get good brakes on a bike, I stop working on it.

Be sure the frame is straight before you go any farther. Look on line for the string method, or take it to a shop for a quick check.

The Park Tools website has some helpful videos.

A medium quality used bike may cost about the same as replacement parts (or less). A lot would depend on where you live and what resources are available. Bike coops and the like are great. Some local bike shops deal in used bikes. Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace can be fruitful. Of course, used parts would be another alternative.

If you are attempting to upgrade what you have it is seldom worth it financially (generally speaking). Especially if the parts are purchased new.

I've used the park tool videos for a few things and they are very good. At least for a newbie like me.
