Eroica Follow-Up: Send Healing Toughts to a Good Man Down
Rumor was that two people were suffered injuries worse than just road rash at this year's Eroica CA. Unfortunately I can confirm that our very own kabuki12 (Joe) was one of them, as I watched him go down hard right in front of me. (I managed to avoid riding over the top of him, for which we are both grateful.)
Fortunately, a sag wagon was right there to take Joe and his bike in. I knew he was scraped and bloodied and that he would one sore puppy in the morning, but it turns out he fractured his cheekbone and his left hand. And yes, as befits the tribe, he wanted to continue on and started straightening the brake lever that had been knocked cattiwumpus. Between me, choke, and the sag driver, we persuaded him of the unwisdom of that idea.
I talked to his wife that evening, and it sounds like he will be fine, but will need some time to heal. I'm sure that well wishes and healing thoughts from us wouldn't hurt, either. Put 'em here or PM him, but let's let Joe know we're thinking of him.

Heal up Kabuki...
I can affirm sections of this ride are pretty scary.. I had modern cables, but vintage brake pads were marginal @ best. I saw a couple people go down in the loose gravel, but they appeared to only get dirty.

Broken bones are no laughing matter. Heroic to try and continue, smart not to.
Heal swiftly, amigo.

Get well soon! You wisely elected to stop, instead of pressing on. A force great enough to break your cheekbone might also have caused a mild concussion, and you certainly do not want to risk a second head impact so soon after the first. (I had a friend who pressed onward after taking a fall 160 miles into a double century, completed it with me, but then set out to make it a triple. At the 220-mile mark, he took a second fall, also attributable to drafting too closely, and went into a coma, from which he never recovered.)

@Kabuki12, sorry to hear about the fall, hope you heal up and are back at it soon. Good move to call it a day afterward, I'd have wanted to do the same, but it's just not worth it.

I went over the handlebars in a bike accident last fall, and also wanted to continue the ride after dusting myself off. However, one arm was hanging multiple inches lower than the other and some friends persuaded me to get checked out in the ER. Turns out I had severed all the ligaments connecting collarbone to shoulder bone. I'm glad I didn't keep going and make things any worse. The accident led to reconstructive shoulder surgery and a painful 15 weeks off the bike. But when I was finally approved again for riding around the first of the year, the goal of riding in Eroica in April also became a great motivator for physical therapy. I wobbled around cautiously in January, started doing more extended rides in Feb, and built up to more and more miles in March and April. I was delighted to complete the Coastal Route at this year's Eroica on Sunday. Heal well Joe, be patient during your recovery, and hope to see you back better than ever next year!

That's terrible news. Best wishes, Joe.
I have to admit, after the gravel descent on the Killer Canyon hill I was thinking that it wasn't nearly as scary as I had been warned. Then when I started the Cypress descent I was like
I had both wheels sliding in one of those corners and felt lucky to have gotten out of it cleanly. I also walked down a couple of corners because I didn't have the hand strength to keep my speed under control.
I hope both injured riders make a full recovery.

Heal up Joe.
You will get well, even if it seems to take way too dang long.
I'm really enjoying being back on the bike after a year of little riding.
You will, too. (Hope your time off is shorter)

Best wishes, Joe. Sounds like you might have been trying too hard to implement Velominati Rule #5.

Joe,
Terribly sorry to hear about your fall / crash but it was wise to stop and get assessed rather than continue. Please take as much time as needed to heal properly. I very much enjoyed out discussions at the concours and registration line and hope we can meet again at the Velo-Retro Pasadena ride once you mend and heal up, and at next year's Eroica.
Does anyone know just how Joe fell or crashed and what the conditions were?
