I always buy winter gear in the summer. Just bought a Bellweather Legacy long sleeve jersey to match my winter bibs for $24.99 on Bikewagon's ebay store.

Me thinks Zwift will have a big impact on winter gear sales over time. I have a closet full of some really good stuff that I hardly use anymore. It is a lot safer and more comfortable on the trainer.

what exactly is "winter" for you??

I ride in -25C if i have to, and i ride every day.
I prefer the hellyhansen base layers, usually the "warm" model, but when its below -20C i go for the thickest one they have. all the good ones are merino/synth hybrids, its 2 layers interwoven.
I also run their pants. the 215g/m2 ones. I also have some of their thinner g/m2 fully synthetic ones that i use when its only 0--10C or so.

I have about 5-6 top base layers (and some i have washed 300-400 times, you need to wash these in wool specific stuff though)
and about 3 pants.

outer shell is usually regular adidas jogging pants. black obviously.
top is an adidas jogging jacket, totally not windproof. it has to be breathing and letting everything in and out imo. otherwise i get wet as F.

in the winter i wear sievi gore tex boots with steel reinforcement for the toes. my job payed for these 300€

top 5% in cost is a minimum qualification. I don't let anything less touch my body.

I hate to admit that this is true for me as well. It's less a function of temperature and more a function of available daylight.

Awesome, I need to find cheap shoe covers. The shops here don't really discount winter gear it seems. Or it's sold out. I snagged a nice running winter jacket in the spring that will work great this winter. Wore it at 0°c with a thin shirt underneath easy, let's see if it will work at -25°c.

A pair of cycling boots would be awesome, but they're like $300 new!

Had to convert quick but -25 is about -13°F, which is what we'll see in January. That's the coldest I've done as well, and it only lasts really a couple weeks before returning to 0°F. But the wind. Ohh the wind, like 20mph steady. I did the same last winter with my work bought boots but mine were alloy toe this year I work indoors and don't want them smelling, so I'll have to get a dedicated pair.

Anyone see good deals on decent goggles? That's another want this year.

At around 0°c, I've found that a decent thermal jersey with light wool longsleeve underneath works great; maybe a light wind vest overtop if it's windy. I like the dhb brand jerseys from Wiggle, which I can usually get for around $40-45 when they go on sale. For underlayers I picked up a bunch of 50% merino sweaters from Kohls for about $12 each, and they're still going strong 3 years later. And yes, good boots are awesome, I love my 45nrth Wolvhammers. Well worth the investment

I live in North Georgia and the coldest ride I did last winter was 17°F so I don't need as much.

My point is that whatever winter means to you and whatever gear you need, it is likely to be on sale as retailers push the leftover 2017 stuff out to make room for 2018 gear.

This is a place to discuss winter gear deals in August, that's all. I'm not trying to compete with anyone.

I bought my LeCol vest and arm warmers in June, knowing full well I wouldn't get to wear them for 5-6 months. They're still in their fancy box.

I got some really nice windproof gloves sitting still with the tags on, too.

I already have a convertible PI jacket and a couple lined jerseys, which with SoCal winters is pretty much all I need.

You are going to at least need a Castelli Gabba and some Nanoflex knickers for that, no?
