Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Can carbon fork bike be carried on roof rack?

I have a fairly new Cervelo R3 and am not sure if I can carry it on my roof rack, which attaches at the front fork, with the wheel off. Shop wasn't sure if carbon front fork could stand the strain. Cervelo site is down? so can't ask them. Any help would be appreciated.

If the fork can hold you up while riding, it certainly will hold up on a rack!

Frame material doesn't matter when it's on your roof and drive into the overhead garage door.

I would bet that the majority of the guys at your LBS ride bikes with carbon forks and the majority of those guys have roof racks.

In related news, storing your bike by hanging it from the wheels will not ovalize the rims.

From reading BF posts for awhile, a Cervelo R3 on a roof rack has about a 5% chance of getting rammed into the garage or the roof of the drive-up bank teller area someday. This applies to all other bikes on roof racks also.

Could you please tell this to my husband, who refuses to hang the bikes from the wheels?

Sure. But whatever you do don't let him just have the bike resting on the floor. That will just flat spot the tires and rims...

Hey, Tom!

Hanging your bike by the wheels is OK!

No, seriously.

No, Tom gravity isn't that strong and metal or carbon isn't that fluid.

Now, glass wheels hung for maybe 150 to 200 years may show some deformation.

That's sooo not funny. He won't hang them from the wheels, nor will he hang them from the top tube (because it might pinch the cables).

If he realizes he might get a flat spot on the tires by resting the the bike on the floor, I'll have to invent some sort of anti-gravity chamber where the bike can be suspended in mid-air. And I'm just not smart enough to invent something like that.

Tell him just to lay them on their sides. Put a blanket over them in winter and play soothing music at all times.

You spent big bucks for a bike even the SHOP isn't sure you can carry around?
I don't mean to sound condescending, and I'll admit to being a steel fan, but posts like this (which are pretty common) just amaze me. A CF owner a few months ago wanted to know if he could safely hang the bike by the top tube while he worked on it, like 18 pounds was going to crumple the thing. The minute the store told me they weren't sure if the fork would hold up the bike, I would have run away.
My Atlantis is pretty heavy compared to carbon, but if I had to carry it with Vise-Grips clamped around the seat tube, i wouldn't worry about it.

This makes me want to scream. The wheels will hold a 200 pound rider when the bike is right side up, but if you turn it over, the weight of the frame will distort them? AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH...
When I went into the Army in 1965, I hung my old Peugeot by the wheels from a rafter in my father's garage. I bought a better bike when I got home in 1968 and ignored the Peugeot until my mom died in 1993. My dad moved to a smaller place, and I got the bike down, pumped up the tires, lubed the chain and rode it home 16 miles. It was still a POS, but the wheels were round.

That would be even worse. First of all, unless you remove the bars, pedals, and cranks, it's going to put pressure at weird angles that are seriously going to deform the frame. If you do pull the fork, bars, pedals, cranks, shifters, etc, it won't be as bad, but it will definitely be flatter on one side.

Your only hope is storing it in outer space, but the radiation is not good for the bike.

What about carbon framed bikes in standard frame supported car racks? I was told the newer carbon frames should be supported with the wheels and not the frame. Are the cf frame tubes that fragile?

This may come as a surprise to you, but we have pranksters on the forum who purposely ask insane questions. Look at the OP again, consider the post count and the total insanity of the supposed response from the shop....

They're pretty fragile to crushing forces, yes. Carbon is extremely strong longitudinally, not so much across the fiber direction. You can use the style that grips the downtube (I've done it, the pro cars do it constantly) but you have to be careful. If you overtighten it you can crush the tube. Just use common sense.

You can also the crush the tube on thin-walled aluminum bikes too, but probably not quite as easily.
