What hardtail do you use? What size Frame? How tall are you? Please read! :)

Hi,
I used to BMX back in the day and I'd like to get into more XC style biking. I'm still trying to choose a hardtail and want to see what others are riding.

I'm 6'1, 180lbs and at the moment I really like Kona bikes but I'm open to any suggestions. I like the style of Kona Chutes but I feel as if they may be outdated as far as quality goes. Am I wrong? Around $500 is my spending limit.

What Hardtail do you use (year/model)?
What size is the frame?
What is your height/weight?

Thanks for sharing, I'm certain this will help me choose a bike that I will love!

5'11"
195 lbs
18" frame
2008 Diamondback Response Sport Hardtail

Converting frame to full suspension next week, also 18".

I also have a 21" hardtail, 2004 Giant Boulder SE. Definitely a bit big for me. It's mounted on my stationary magnetic resistance trainer and serves that purpose well.

KHS and Mongoose in my sig. Both currently rigid, but have had sproing up front in the past. Once I hit the Lottery, I'll get sproing on front of the Mongoose again.

17" 199? KHS with 100mm stem, 15" 1996 Mongoose with 130mm stem.

5'6" 145.

I LOVE Konas as a general rule, mainly because they made steel well after practically everyone else stopped. Chute ain't exactly my style (not into long-travel so much), but if I could find a Chute in good shape for $500, I'd be stoked!

if you don't mind building your own, the Nashbar Access frame is frequently on sale (I think I bought mine for $149). Then I bought a nearly new Trek full suspension bike on CL, switched the components, sold the Trek frame and fork, and built this bike for $250.

almost forgot: 5'-10", 170lb, I think this is a 16" frame.

This should help you with sizing:

https://www.ebicycles.com/bicycle-too.../mountain-bike

But there's no substitution for actually trying out the bike. Top bar should be about 1-2 inches below your groin when you're standing flat on your feet on the bike to avoid slipping off the pedals and busting a nut. But it's all about how comfortable you feel.

I have an older Specialized Rockhopper. I bought the frame on Ebay and built it up myself. I don't know the year. I put Marzocchi shocks on the front - around $250 on sale at Blue Sky Cycles. I'm not an expert, but I'm very happy with everything, including the forks.

I'm 6'4".
I weigh 195 lbs.
It's a 23" frame.

oh, and there's no replacement for trying the different bikes to figure out what you like. The fit calculators are nice to get an idea. Competitive cyclist is a good one. Keep in mind though, they are only as good as the numbers you put in and give a general idea. You still need to make sure the geo. Works for you.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm not going to buy anything online (yet), I'm not that ballsy. I'm taking into consideration that I'm pretty new in this field so I just wanted an idea of what bikes to consider looking at in a bike store and figure out what geo. is good for me. After I've tried some out I plan on building it up how I want it.... I've put BMX bikes together before, I'm sure it can't be a whole lot harder with the right amount of forum scouring. Again, Thank you all.

I have an old 2002 Spec. Stumpjumper M4 with a Fox 100mm Float Fork that I still ride. Although I generally ride a newer "fully" I still like this hardtail for its responsiveness and handling. It's a great climber and does well on the local singletracks.

I am 5'8" the bike is 17. You ain't getting my weight!

OP: coming from BMX, are you sure you have labeled yourself correctly in saying you want "XC"? XC = weight wieners, shaven legs, lap times, keep your arse planted and climb-climb-climb...it's sort of a dedicated "Roadie on Dirt" kinda thing.

With your background, I'd think you may like the "All Mountain" style of bikes a little better b/c you may still wanna jump and horse around on the trail. Still very pedal'able, but built a little tougher for the clyde, and definitely more fun to shred on.
