There are lots of climbing specifically going up Mt. Baldy Road where many experience a slow horrible death.

I rode the tour of Long Beach Marathon yesterday.

I'm training for the metric and filled out the registration form - just need to take it and pay the fee. Several members of my bike group are doing one or another of the rides. I'm very excited... this is my first organized metric. I'm comfortable with the mileage --- just need to work on the hills.

I'm doing my first metric century ride for this event. I feel okay about the distance, but expect to go v-e-r-y slowly up the Baldy to Shinn Road hill...will be channeling "The Little Engine That Could"

Yeah, Terry and I will likely be right behind you. It isn't a problem for him, but I'm still struggling every time I ride up there. And this will be my first ride over 50 miles, unless we do one sometime between now and then.

Actually, the epic Glendora Ridge Road loop we did was 52 miles, so this will be your second 50+ ride. And the TdeFoothills has a lot less climbing.

Ill be there doing the metric half. This is only my 3rd organized ride since starting cycling again in May. Im doing the El Tour de Tucson 40 mile ride the following weekend.

We are signed up and plan to do the Century on our Tandem. Enjoyed the metric last year and are looking forward to doing a few more miles this year. Looks like the weather will be perfect!

All will be fine. Just take your time at the start and let the speedsters move away quickly. You'll soon have your own pace group and will enjoy the ride. Looks like they have about 800 folks registered - should be a nice time.

Well, I did the Century today and it just walk in the park for me.....even with the headwind toward the 15FWY..... after Fontana Park Stop.... I zooming down Cherry RD and completely miss the right turn onto Victoria and end up by the California Speedway and try to my way back to Arrow Blvd. So I end up doing 110miles today....

Also saw Mr. Beanz and his wife recording video and taking photos...

I did the metric today and had a great time. Not my first metric, but my first organized, hilly metric. The headwind wasn't too bad heading back west from Victoria Gardens, but just enough to make it feel like a long moderate climb.

And I saw Mr. Beanz .... I'm still amazed I recognized him the first time on Foothill Blvd, only from the forum pictures and he was wearing a cap! I didn't expect to see him before Baldy so that was a pleasant surprise, as was meeting him and Gina in person at the picnic.

Yes, I did it, hills and all. It being the metric century - my first of those and my longest ride to date after starting cycling on 1/1/2010. See what a solid New Year's Resolution can do for your life!

It was easier than I expected it to be despite the climbs and some serious hamstring cramps that luckily happened in view of the 2nd support station. A big thanks to the two women who helped me dismount from my bike so that I could walk off the cramps. Yikes! But the rest of ride went without an issue and the lasagna at the finish made all of the effort worthwhile

pmcq, you started riding just about the same time I did! I'd done a bit of riding on the tandem already, and had ridden my single bike for a couple weeks by then, but January 1, 2010 was the first day I rode with my clipless pedals. And fell and broke my arm...

I'm so sorry that you fell. I had nightmares about falling for a couple of weeks after I started riding with clipless pedals. They stopped after I finally fell - luckily while stopped at a light. Even luckier, I came away with only a massive bruise on my thigh that looked like the North American continent. Glad that you're healed and doing things like the TdF yesterday.

I did the metric half in 1:54:10 with an avg speed of 16 mph. Not to bad for a 46 yo clyde riding for 6 months. That was also the most climbing Ive done in a single ride (~1200 ft). Coming down Victoria Park just before the old bridge I hit a pine cone laying in the shadows at about 24 mph and I somehow managed to stay on two wheels - by far my scariest moment to date. My arthritic knees are a bit painful today so Im off to my jacuzzi this evening. I hope to be ready for the metric next year.
