Tour De Foothiils Pictures (video later)
So I grabbed the camera and stood out on Foothill to watch the tour go by. Amazing how big this ride is now, might have to give it a try next year. I had about 5 shouts"Mr. Beanz" on the road by riders I didn't know. One was "LittleWing" (not the correct handle but close ).
I did take my tools and pump as any smart guy would. Loaned out the pump to 2 different riders while driving the course. Filled about 10 bottles on Baldy Rd for those that couldn't wait til the next waterstation. Gina and I watched the climbers till the end. Good thing cause some needed water and the station at the top of Baldy seemed to have closed shop from what I saw. I shuttled a struggling rider to Shinn Rd, he was having a terrible day.
I did see Yen with her 50+ forum jersey. Wow, I was expecting an old woman on a hybrid with streamers but DARN, this lady looked hardcore roadie when she rolled by on foothill. Cruising in the pack no problem. Totally surprised when I saw her float up Baldy! From past reading, I thought she was worried about the climb but nope! The first section of Baldy is steep from what I've experienced. Someone with a Garmin shouted 12% on the ride. It's no baby but I did see a large quantity of riders stop and a good number walk the hill. I thought Yen would stop for a mintue but sheesh, she floated up the hill. I have a scene in the video where she appears to be riding with a group of riders up Baldy. Don't let that fool you. She rode up and the others hopped back on their bikes as she approached them. Of the group in the scene, she was the only one to ride up without stopping.
I did see AZNCarbos, stopped for a chat. Looked like he was working pretty good up the climb. He was doing pretty good but really, I did expect the pace to be a little faster.
Gina and I had fun watching the riders climb Baldy. After we headed to the finish. Met up with Jeff and Angie, a new and serious tandem team. That's where I met Yen and had a little fun chat and introduction. Nice Job Yen!
Vid should be done on Monday, need lots of time for this one. I have another ride tomoorow and it's my daugthers b-day celebration in the evening.

I joined and did it! There were 3 rides, half-metric and metric centuries and the standard century. Joined the metric century and rolled out from the Upland Park. I have friends from the club (Cycling Connection) who extended ride support. The courses were marked well with arrows painted on the street that even without maps, it was easy to figure which way to go. There was a minor confusion where the metric and standard centuries separated with some of the metric riders inadvertently followed the standard course which would add 40 miles or so to their rides without knowing it.
First rest stop was around San Dimas canyon, nicely located before the climb up Mt. Baldy Road. Lots of water and they handed out Gu gel, Clif bars, PBJ and banana cake slices among other things. After the restroom and water/food break, it was time to tackle the hardest part of the course, up Mt. Baldy Road and it did not disappoint. The gradient of the first hill was too much for some that they dismounted and walked up. Most were going up at 5 MPH or less. That short distance took a lot of energy and there was another one, though less stiff. At the top of the road was a water station, a sight for sore eyes and legs. For those who made it this far, they knew the hard part of their day was over, but there was 20+ miles to go.
The 2nd rest stop was in a strip mall in the Colonies in Upland. The sponsor was REI and again more water, Gu and Clif bars. I think I got a lot to last me till the end of the month, sorry. From there on, it was flat all the way until you hit Arrow Hwy, just 5 miles from finish. Arrow is going slightly up (heading west) into a headwind. At this stage of the ride, you are just spent and it was like riding flat.
I saw a group of 12 tandems (must be a tandem club), triples, mountain bikes, hybrids, fixies, SS and all sorts.
Finish line and you are welcomed by a group of teens toting cow bells. Lots of sponsor booths, Lasagna and salad lunch, mingle and observe and the beautiful 70 deg day is over. The 100 mile guys did their ride in mostly 5 hours 30 minutes, taking into account another extra hill climb after the Mt. Baldy climb.
I learned that attendance was around 800 riders. Bikers from far places like San Diego, Palm Springs, Sacramento, Solvang, etc attended. I will be sure to attend again next year.
