how often do you buy a new road bike?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Number of bikes needed = n+1; where n= the number of bikes you currently own.

You should buy a new, top of the line bike (N) each year. N-1 becomes backup, N-2 becomes beater.

I have a rule that I keep a frame for at least a year then after that I stick to it unless I can find a really good deal on something better, but I keep parts until they wear out.

Nicely done need to somehow make my wife understand this equation!

Anyways I bought my first and slowly upgraded to Dura-Ace/better wheels/cockpit and used all my old parts on a frame so I have 2.

I bought my current bike six years ago and I see no need to replace it. I will probably have it at least 12 years and even then, I will probably buy a new one and keep my current one as a back up.

It is like trying to find the perfect beer, you will not find it if you don't buy as many as you can.

I understand having more than one bike but I don't see why someone would replace a bike every two years. Bikes are not cheap and technological advances do not happen fast enough that a two year old bike is obsolete. If I raced bikes for a living I could understand it but not for a recreational rider.

I typically buy a new road bike when I hit BIG cycling milestones. This may happen yearly or every couple years depending. Most importantly though I have to be able to justify it financially, which isent always easy to do even for a hobby I love.

3,000 miles? You know you can replace chains, cables and tires, right? You don't have to buy a whole new bike when they wear out.

Unless i get really good all the sudden i'm gonna stick with what i have.

The above statement is probably a lie, probably will have a new bike in less than 2 years. Sometimes you just gotta scratch that itch

Used to be about every 10 years. With the rapid improvements in CF frames that's come down to 5 years. How long till the next one depends on how fast, and how significantly bike designs change.

Now you did say road bikes. Invariably, I end buying some sort of bike about every year, ( a TT bike, a tandem, a track bike, a cross bike) Next will be a new MTB, but the old one is 25 years old, so it needs replacing.

Bought a new SSCX frameset this year so I'll probably need to wait a bit before getting a new road frame.

Yeah, but different bikes are different. Its not always about trying to be better of faster. For me its been settling on what I really like and getting a different bike for different uses. My first bike is a relatively heavy steel bike that has a rack and panniers pretty much permanently installed for commuting, touring, etc. My second bike was a light fast road bike. At some point I may want to try a CF wunderbike, but not really itching for that at the moment.

Current riding my third and fourth road bikes right now since taking it up 9 or 10 years ago. Still haven't bought a 'new' bike.
