Very Cool Commuter by BMC! Is it worth this price tag?

Is this worth $725? I like the belt drive and the IGH but is it worth twice what an entry level used road bike is worth? Or $200 less than a carbon fiber road bike? I know...different bikes but I'm of the opinion anything can be a commuter or casual (20-30 miles) tourer. What should I offer?

Probably worth that. I’m inclined to say it’s a really good deal if the brakes and tires are good and it’s been well maintained. Link to the ad?

I'm also wondering at 5 10.5 with 33.5 ish inseam if this isn't too small without having to buy another stem

Yeah I think I'd have to buy a stem. I'm going to pass. I think he said he'd go to $525 but I still have trouble justifying almost $600 for a hybrid bike. If it didn't have the IGH and belt drive, he'd be lucky to get $300

Seems worth checking out in person just in case. I’m not very good at sizing by geometry numbers yet.

Also, check out Priority bikes. Some models have belt drive and internally-geared hubs. Very practical, well priced.

If in good shape and it fits, it could be a decent bike, Looks like good solid upgrades made to it but you would have to ride it and see. I would probably buy it if I was looking for a bike like that and had the money.

Two quick thoughts:

  1. If you’re not pretty sure it’ll fit you right as is, I’d pass.
  2. I just bought a Priority Apollo 11 the other week. Keep in mind that in exchange for the belt drive, you also have an IGH, which costs you 5-10% efficiency compared to chain/derailleur.

Key is whether the IGH has been well maintained, they can go bad in one season if doesn't have great seals and oil lube (like a Rohloff does); Many other cheaper hubs rely on the greased outer bearings to keep out water. Bike shops with a lot of IGH experience recommend adding good grease there, even with a new bike, and annual clean and relube, even if dry for fresh grease, but especially if ridden in wet, to keep out water.

Yes, that's how features work: when there are more of them, and they are more desirable, the product costs more.

Thanks for that article. I have a 10 year old Rohloff and even though they are no longer an official Rohloff service center They will drill the Rohloff hub shell for 48 holes. My Rohloff is currently drilled for 36 holes and I replaced the original Velocity Aeroheat rims with Velocity Psycho rims a month after I purchased the bicycle and later at the suggestion of a forum member rebuilt the Rohloff wheel and added the Rohloff flange support rings. Cycle Monkey has gone out of business so as far as i know Peter White Cycles is the only authorized Rohloff service center in the US.

Oh really is that how it works? Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't say I was surprised that it cost more, did I? There's always one p-hole on here who has to chime in.
