Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Me too! And yeah, it WAS fun! I've never had a car before or since that I was so "at one" with. It was just the right size, just the right amount of power available when asked for, and any opening in traffic that I saw, I just had to think about it and I was in it and moving at the right speed. Hard to believe it was only 106hp.

Just got my flu shot; the person at HEB was so smooth and fast she was in and out without my feeling it.

It wasn't the volume of the TV, it was the vein-popping delivery of the "analysis". The commercial breaks were more quiet than the show.

Some of us need more water than others. I'm sure intense hiking in hot weather is similar. I've done road rides on 6 or 7 liters and still needed more. I've drank 6 liters at work. When I was working I had to force myself to stop and get water throughout the day or I would be wiped out.

A week at COTA last year it was feels-like 116*. I went through 7 bottles (moving very slowly) over two hours, and was dehydrated.

No offense to VW lovers... I bought a VW Rabbit years ago for my wife. A headlight burned out. I have pulled, rebuilt and replaced several auto engines and many motorcycle engines. I'm not a complete newb. I could not, for the life of me, figure out how to get the headlight out. I actually found a VW Rabbit manual, and it said to break the grill rivets, replace headlight, re-rivet the grill. I swore never to own another German vehicle.

Like anything, you can spend as much or as little as you want

Generally though, $50-$60 is about the range that I would want to look at.

There's a real issue for me in picking a tire out, though. There are so many options with tread patterns it becomes overwhelming. Road tires are stupid easy in comparison.

Although it's a moot point at the moment since the bike budget is zero, and has been for a while

Are you using pre-loaded syringes, and where do you have to inject the stuff? I might have some advice (or not) as to minimizing discomfort. Not professional, mind; just from on-going/rest-of-life experience.

I had an 07.5 GTI and while it was “nice”, it wasn't amazing as per reputation, but it did have a major failure every year so I moved on from it under warranty. Funnily enough, the 96 Civic it replaced was the fun, light, tossable car the old GTIs apparently were.

The '86 GTI was pretty good for the 10 years I owned it, but it did have one memorable failure - fuel pumps. There was, IIRC a transfer pump in the gas tank, and another up front for the injection system. The transfer pump went out, which then took out the main pump. Same thing happened to the 91 Passat we bought for my wife. Turns out the giveaway was a buzzing sound. Anyhow, ended up having to have each car towed to the dealer, and of course neither was under warranty anymore. The Passat also had an electrical problem in the heater/ventilation panel - it would short out, leaving you with no fan or way to control the ventilation. We replaced it twice in 10 years of owning it.

By contrast, Mrs. GeneJockey's 2001 Toyota Sienna just keeps running, and running, and running. And my 2014 Dodge also just keeps running, and running, and running. Cars are so much more reliable now.

It was all kinds of trouble, but mostly hydraulic, and the nearest place to repair it was 35 miles away. One time, he needed it repaired but didn't want to pay to have it towed 30 miles, so he just stopped every so often to top up the reservoir. Mom followed him, and got a windshield sprayed with a fine mist of hydraulic fluid for her trouble.

And that's not even touching on the two decades when my brother and his wife owned Citroens and Renaults.
