I have a comparable bike, Emonda SLR, eTap, Zipp 303 and i've ridden a bone stock Emonda SL6 and there's a noticeable difference. Is the SLR worth 2.5 times as much? Depends on how much disposable income you have. When I bought my bike I was driving a 14 year old Civic with 245,000 miles.

We do have Trek dealers in the area, but I see more Giant, Specialized, Cannondale than I do Trek. Never gave it much thought until saw this topic.

A bike shop owner told me that Trek, Specialized, and Giant bikes have the majority of the market, everyone else fights for what's left.

I have actually - new Trek store opened up locally and the owner has one prominently displayed. We took it out for a spin. Extremely sweet ride. Still, it's way more money than I'd ever pay for a bike. The only way I'd drop that kind of $$ would be the aforementioned mega-millions lottery and finding a one of a kind gold plated Colnago or similar ultra-classic steel bike. At least I could lie to myself convincingly and say it was an "investment!"
Last year I finally decided to buy my first new car in 40 years.. a Subaru Impreza. I would of loved, and could afford, an Audi S4 but couldn't justify the $50k price tag compared to the Impreza $22k.

My first road bike was a Trek 1400. Back then, around 1995, I was broke, recently divorced and very depressed. I had been a mountain biker for years, but my buddies had been trying to get me into road riding for a while. I borrowed $500 from a good friend to buy the used purple Trek and quickly became obsessed with road riding. I found I couldn't be depressed when I was on the bike, struggling to stay on the wheel of my friends who were much stronger than me. Now, I am still a serious road rider. No matter how many Treks may be flooding the roads, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for that old Trek 1400.
BTW, I did pay back that $500 to my friend!

I've got to say, now is a great time to get a great deal on rim brake bikes in the bike shop and used. People now prefer even the crappiest mechanical disks to rim, depressing the sale value of some really great bikes.

I feel like most people who are anti-Trek are pro-Spesh. I don't get it, but it seems that way haha. My buddy who actually got me into cycling is a die-hard Spesh lover. Rides both a Specialized and an S-WORKS. All he does is talk about how trash/generic Trek is. So of course I got one just to spite him. I kid...lol. I got one because I really like the Domane and their customer service was on point! Bottom line, ride what you like, no matter how many you see on the road. If you're worried about other people having the bike you are getting, you're most likely riding for the wrong reason haha. Because that's not going to affect you if you're commuting, if you're racing, or if you're just hanging it in your office at home.
Buddy and I were both talking about how many Treks there were on the road...and as soon as we started saying that, we started seeing people on their S-WORKS, literally everywhere. I actually don't know how many people I've seen just put-putting around on these $12-$13k bikes in their Bora or other pro team kit. But you know what? Who cares? It's their money, their preference, and their life! I do think a lot of it has to do with the greater interest in pro cycling these days. People see the big brands on the TV and they go "ooooh". Especially Specialized. Peter Sagan and these Specialized pro teams are all over the place in media. Specialized is definitely getting business out of it, if these brand new Venge/Tarmac all over the road are any indication.
