Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

To the OP please be more precise with your claims and double check them.

To others. Has anyone else validated his/her claims? Everything I bought at the start of the year I checked I can buy again (from Merlins, CRC) only now cheaper.

Are you in the US? When I click, I am told unavailable in your area. Read the entire thread.

Check where others are ordering from. That shop is the exception, for the rest of the shops, what you’re saying is more or less correct.

I had a much larger order from Ribble and I wasn’t charged any, but even the official website (not the shop’s) says you “may” be charged.

I know, not much of a help, but I guess worst that can happen is to make time in one’s day and go to the post office for a 4% fee.

My concern are the Shimano parts/groupsets. I've never had trouble from PBK with tires and wheels.

Like I said, my order total was much larger than a group set would have cost, but I have no personal experience if they’d treat a group set separately.

Merlin makes you jump thru hoops to find their component section, but yes, they do sell to the US at favorable prices. Can't say the same for Ribble.

That's about as easy as it gets, imo, but as always, ymmv.

Anything over $800 is a roll of the dice. That one person has their order squeeze through doesn't mean that your's won't get tagged.

I just got a couple of Shimano SM RT-800 ICE rotors and an extra set of SM SH10 cleats from Merlin a couple of weeks ago. Both way cheaper than I could find domestically. The only catch is the free shipping can take from 1-2 weeks in my experience. Not an issue for me but if you are in a hurry there are probably better choices.

Just ordered Dura Ace Tri-TT shifters from Merlin on Monday along with five Panaracer SK GK gravel tires at $30 a pop. Saved nearly $200 on shifters alone.

Maybe totally unrelated to buying from somewhere like Merlin/Ribble but I bought a full bike from a UK shop in February for $1400 USD and got hit with a customs tax when it landed in the US.

I've order a couple of Di2 groupsets (along with other items) from Merlin this year, and wasn't hit with any import duties.
However, I also ordered a set of wheels from Hunt in July (same time as a groupset) and was hint with a 12% fee...I think it comes down to the merchant, and how they fill out the customs form.

But, even with import duties, the parts are still quite a bit cheaper than if purchased in the US...particularly shimano groupsets.

They won't be able to buy those same groupset bundles new stock wholesale. Once they run out that is it for Shimano deals.

Personally I will spending less money knowing I get less value for my dollar if I am forced to buy at 200% bike shop markups.

Damn those Bentley-driving bike shop owners and their 200% mark-up! I shake my fist in their general direction!

What do I care what kind of car they drive?

Maybe a commercial with Sarah McLachlan and starving bike shop owners will help guilt more people into donating money.
