No pix, but I got up at 5:00 and put on a reflective vest and switched on my lights and got in 8.5 miles in the dark around my neighborhood circuit. Between the hours of 5:00 and 6:00 I am the only moving thing see on those streets - not even the cats are out. No traffic, just my shadow on the road changing shapes and angles as I roll past the streetlights and the sound of my tires on the pavement. I lost some time at the start to needing fresh batteries in my headlight and maybe a lap's worth of time to needing to stop and tighten my saddle clamp, but 8.5 miles beats 0 miles any day of the week. I'm blessed that I have a course a smidgen over one mile even, with a good descent to spin my up to around 130 rpm at one end and a good climb suitable for practicing both smooth standing and seated low-rpm ascents, and after all that I still had time to shower, dress, feed and deliver children to school and get to work in time to start the coffee maker before beginning the workday.

Blue Ridge view

Buck Mountain Ford. No rain in a month so easy peasy!

Horse farm - Catterton Rd
Well, for those of you reading regularly, you might remember my gravel debacle described in post #14096 on the previous page. Today, I got back on that horse, tires pumped up to higher pressure and a pouch full of spare tubes and I promptly flatted in the exact same spot, 0.71 miles in as flat #1 last time! I immediately turned around, giving up on the idea of riding gravel on this bike, but since I didn’t flat on the way out, I took a left turn onto a flat gravel road of about a mile. That went fine so I added some more in and got a 28 mile ride in with a total of 10 miles of gravel with no more mishaps.

We’ll call it a draw today, although I still need to get past that devil section of Fox Mountain Rd.

They passed new transit taxes and everybody is out paving roads. After a teeth chattering road ride out to Orinda yesterday I thought I'd do better in the dirt. Out on the waterfront with the Hoo Koo E Koo. The local wrecking yard burning again. Who needs a socket set when you can just torch parts off...

Took the long way to my old childhood town of Edmonds. There are a couple super climbs and descents on this route; the Edmonds Ferry Terminal is the halfway point:

Lucky me, I got there just as one was pulling out.

And here's my old street:

I dropped the wife's car off for a service in Oakland, and then took the long way home through the East Bay Hills (through Moraga Montclair, out to Redwood Rd, Pinehurst, and back down Tunnel Rd. for those who know the area). 27 miles and ~2650' of climbing. I've been commuting by bike, but this was my first decent ride in almost a month. Despite a couple too many Negronis last night, the legs felt good.

A view of the bay

Redwoods, red bike

Coming down Tunnel Rd. A lot of fellow cyclists were out today.

No, I mistakenly said Moraga when I meant to say Montclair. I started my ride from Honda of Oakland then headed for the hills en route back to Berkeley.

Got up at O-dark-thirty today to ride out to a pond and watch the sunrise.

It was a gorgeous morning.

Oh, some quackers came over to share my muffin.

Cheers

It wasn't wet when we started, and it never got so wet we were sending up roostertails from our tires, but it wasn't my best ride of the summer, let's put it that way.

Dodged a ****-load of slugs during our almost-50-mile ride. I still ended up running over a few - and a lot of other crap...

Also, apologies to @Wildwood - I totally forgot to get back to you on time/location! But we'll see you on the 22nd at Marymoor Park

Got the bars taped and did 53 miles with @-holiday76 in and around the Delaware river, bordering PA/NJ. Great weather and a great ride! Those are his calves in the picture....

It's true. I don't suppose it would be too hard to make a wrong move and end up in the drink...

So that means you have to deal with temps in the 70’s instead of 80’s and 90’s?

Great pics and bikes everyone. I love this thread!

I have finally completed my gravel battle saga. I put some slightly bigger tires on the Ciöcc and made it past the devil patch on Fox Mountain Rd. It helps that there was a couple of days of rain recently that smoothed out a lot of the road, but I feel confident the new set up would have handled it anyway. 32 miles with 14 on gravel and no flats.

More From My Morning Commute

Not the river again... This is at the top of the hill, before the fast descent down to the waterfront.

After work, this is where I claim my reward for climbing the steep Stryker Hill.

Here's a beauty shot of my Specialized Sequoia commuter; It's a 650b conversion that turned out a treat.

Life is so much better when you can ride to work.

I've had two nice rides over the last two days.

Yesterday was 25 fast miles on my SLT. I spread the rear triangle and threw in a nice lightweight wheelset. I believe it is somewhere in the 1400-1600 gram range.

A lightweight wheelset and fast tires really livens this bike up! It's a little tricky shifting accurately across the 9 speed cassette with friction levers, but certainly possible with more practice.

The trees and the bean fields are starting to change colors in earnest.

Today was 17 miles on my fixed gear Grand Jubile. Nice warm and calm evening. Trying to make the most of these kinds of days before they are gone.
