No ‘official’ camping yet. I just finished tweaking the bike and am about to wind down on camping gear purchases. So far I’ve taken a few 30-50mi single-day rides with the ‘tour load’. I’m trying to increase my endurance for a multi-day tour. I live in the Deep South, so I’m still looking for cooler weather, which seems to be elusive this year..

With the front and rear racks, could this weight not have been better distributed? Well..I suppose that's really a secondary issue considering that pedal stroke obstruction is the bigger problem...

I don't know, that looks like an effective locking positioning to me. I'd imagine the lock is stowed differently while riding.

Its in transition right now, from clunker challenge bike to better tires, saddle, pedals and bar and stem, as I am trying to get in some rides this fall but during the winter I plan to give this 87 Trek 520 Cirrus the spa treatment

I saw that picture several years ago and have been trying to find it again.
That is really an amazing picture!
It would be fun to hear the story about that person's bike tour and hear their thoughts when they woke up and saw that sight!
I wonder how long they had to delay their day's ride waiting for the visitor to remove itself from their bike.
Also I wonder what foodstuff or item on the bike attracted the python to their bike in the first place?

A quick search turned up this pic which may be the same bike all loaded up sans python.
It does have a different crankset and a few other changes from python pic but still looks to me to be the same bike.

Speaking of Portages...
This just landed at my LBS:
I bought it from BF member @nesteel, and have big plans for it. Basically, I am going to take the cockpit, racks, and bags from this bike:
... along with a Deore XT 7 x 3 drivetrain, and build it into a Gentrified weekend tourer. I did plenty of bike camping in my youth, these days I prefer a nice B&B instead. This will be a fun project, and I'll post lots of pics when it is finished.

I'm still enjoying my 86 Schwinn Passage having it around 2 years now.
Got in 25 miles on it today on a stlll darn hot late September day.

those are conti's, though...lol! i could be wrong about those, but in my experience with conti's they're always smaller from the "stated" size. i have had two sets and have a friend that had one set. of one of my sets and his set of "42", they came out more like 38/39. i exchanged the other set i had because they came out to be 32's vs 38's.

I'm a fan of these vintage touring bikes.I tend to run the max tire size I can fit.On this Passage I'm currently running Continental Contact Speed tires in a folding 700x42.They measure pretty close to stated size on Velocity Dyad rims.I just checked with a caliper.My experience in the past with Continental's also was that they were typically under the stated size.No problem on the fork as there's plenty of clearance there.The rear tire is really too tight and and I was getting some rub on the drive side while cranking with 60 psi.I deflated to about 45 and it was clearing without rubbing but still a very tight fit.If the wheel was out of true (which it's not) it would definitely be a no go.I like this bike enough and the tires I plan on having my local builder dimple the stays to allow adequate clearance.YMMV.I'm now fiddling around with a recently purchased 84 Voyageur and 650b wheels. Challenging!

I've already posted this photo on another thread but here's my 1984 Miyata 1000. I absolutely love this bike. It rides like a dream, loaded or unloaded. I also have a 1984 Univega Specialissima frameset that I'm currently collecting parts for.
