1974 Raleigh Super Course

As I continue to do stupid stuff I ended up with a 1974 Raleigh Super Course to go with the 1979 one. Surprise surprise it does not have the right rims. Front is a Aarya steel. Back is a Weinmann but it was supposed to come with Nisi. Never heard of Nisi. Could they have subbed a Weinmann on the line if they ran out of Nisi so all I have to worry about is the front? Looks like Nisi is hard to find and if the Weinmann is wrong I may as well put on a pair of 1983 Araya alloys I have here. I like to keep vintage bikes close to original. Thanks ,Keiht

Love to see some pics of the bike. The rims have likely been swapped at different times. That’s okay though, rims, like spokes are a consumable product that should need to be switched out from time to time if a bike is getting ridden. If you try finding used rims to match original spec you’re very likely to encounter used rim problems, severe hops, worn brake tracks, cracks, anything really. Think of rims like bar tape, brake pads, tires, and brake cables. You just gotta let those go. You’re usually better off with newer period looking rims. As Super Courses go there are some bits that have more of that essential vintage character. I like the Carlton lever hoods, the seat post binder bolt with the “R” nut, the GB stem, I even enjoy the Weinmann center pulls and utilizing that tiny brake bridge adjuster. Of course, it’s your bike to do with as you wish.

if a 1974 it would be a Mark II

OEM rims would be Weinmann 27 X 1 1/4 wired-ons

possible that a Super Course TT model would have come with NISI tubular rims

My first proper road bike was a 1974 Raleigh Super Course, so I'd love to see pictures of your bike too.

I have a 1974 Super Course Mk II with clincher Nisi rims, which I believe to be original to the bike. Rides nice.

Hi, The 1974-76 catalogs specify Nisi. Not going to chase those around. I am going to mount a pair of Araya alloys from early 80s Same ones that come on an 83 SC. Trying to find the decals and in particular the one on the main bar that said SC MK II is going to be rough as Vecal is gone There is a place in Aus that does the earlier and later 70s ones so i sent them a picture.

tip -

check the mating of the bottom bracket spindle to the crank arms on the cycle's NERVAR Sport chainset

there was one batch of them which the factory let out where the brooching of the arms was not correct and they would not stay seated

Raleigh dealers had a bin in the workroom for the faulty ones

your set is probably perfectly fine; it is just something to check on

[some Super Course Mk. II cycles received other chainsets; the NERVAR Sport was specification]

Pro tip from a Nervar Star crankset owner: If you need a new (or different-sized) chainring and can't find any Nervar-proprietary 128mm BCD units, buy a common 130mm ring and elongate the mounting holes inward by 1mm each. Been there ... done that when I wanted a 44T -- worked like a champ.

1974 sc

You wanted pics ,here it is. I replaced the giant huge cush seat with a Brooks from a 1977 GP I had laying around. I had 27x1.18 Panaracers on my spare 1983 Araya alloy rims. Polished it up. I love the red. I think I like the looks better then the 79 I am trying to do and the 83 I have had for a while. The only decal that is in trouble is the top bar Super Course MK II and the 531 decal is missing No idea where to get those anymore. My first ride on it my gut feeling was it felt better then the 83 SC which is a very nice unit This one weighs about 1lb more Also thinking of dumping the red tape and going to white which is what it came with.

Looks great from here! Reynolds decals are available at H Lloyds the official Reynolds decal supplier. I believe you also need these Carlton Race Proved decals. They sit just below the crown. You can see them in the 74 catalog image but they’re often missing on real examples.

Why were the early 70s Carltons "Rage Proved," and what does that even mean?

Yeah, you saw a lot of Raleigh Super Courses in the peloton back in the day.

It gets even funnier when you look at the 1974 Carlton catalog. They used that “Race Proved” transfer on the Equipe, the Kermesse, the Carlton Ten, and the Cobra. I wasn’t around yet in 74 but I doubt any of those bikes made it into a peloton of any sort. Still, I kind of like it.

Maybe it was 'trickle-down' technology?

74 Super course.

Here is what it looks like now. Still waiting for the SC MK II decals from AU. I ended up with some 531 decals and put them on the blades as I thought that is what had been on there but after looking at the 74 catalog closer I see they are the Carlton ones . Can those be had in the US. I do have one of them Thank

(inexplicably to me) There were actually Continental level teams riding Viking Severn Valleys in events up until about 1965. Workmanship may have been a tad nicer than a Super Course, but they were almost the same weight.

HLloyds for the Carlton “Race Prooved” decals. They’re in the UK but they don’t take too long to ship.
