I friend picked this up at the curb for me - I think it is a 1996 Rockhopper that as very few original parts but the CrMo Aluminum frame looks good. I suspect it was converted to a college commuter at some point and got left behind at the college campus in town. I'm calling it the CurbHopper. Looks like the wheelset is a freewheel replacement.

This is the bike that keeps on giving. Was bought as a package with other bikes from garage sale for $25. Lived in my garage as a extra/loaner/smaller bike. Was a lady friends full time ride for a while. Next was loaned and then given to a neighbor. Came back a couple of years later. Loaned to another (homeless) neighbor, they got something that fit better and gave it back. Got a call from another neighbor "do you have a bike I can borrow" off it went again. A few months later (last week) saw my neighbor and he rolled out the bike to give back I asked if he was still riding it? "yep" So I said well it's yours now. This bike must be a cat, well into it's nine lives.



On a sadder note (previously saved, now likely headed for dump), I sold a Bianchi that was too small for me, to a neighbor. It was his first road bike and it was cool to see him flying around the neighborhood with a big smile on his face. His girlfriend caught me when she was entering their complex "wanna take a look at a bike I have" So I went to see what she had. It was a Linus Mixte, rust on all the parts that could rust. Their bike storage is outside, right on the coast, and it just a place for bikes to go to die. The Linus didn't make me too sad, but then I glanced to the right and saw the Bianchi, Ugh . . . chain is one solid rusted piece, all parts rusted, rust emerging from under the paint, all over the frame. Bike is no longer ride able, chances are he won't rehab it.

I hate that. A short coworker needed a bike and I sold them a small, minty 1996 Trek 750. I could see the good condition paint get scratched and scuffed up in real time. I saw the tires lose air gradually (maybe I should have given them more Presta valve instructions) until they got the inevitable pinch flat. To them it was just an old bike they got for cheaper than a nasty big box store option.

So here’s a cool story. I saw an ad on FB marketplace for 2 bikes. Of course they were non drive side pictures and not close ups, but I could tell what they were. An early model Specialized Allez Epic and an early Trek 1200. They were in my sons town about 4 hrs. away, so I gambled and bought them for $80. Knowing they were most likely 105 equipped bikes it would be worth parts alone. So I came to pick them up today and the Allez had a couple hidden surprises. Someone swapped in a Dura Ace 8 speed group with shifters (fully functional), derailleurs and hubs. Sadly the carbon/aluminum joints do not look great. But I’d say it was a score!

Those wheels are the ticket! The Epic had fairly solid joints but did have some bottom bracket separation issues. The other stuff looks like clearcoat failure. I'd buff it down and reseal.

Yes, both sets of wheels are nice and true. I am a fan of the Matrix wheels on the old Treks also.

Yesterday, I went up to the Monroe (Michigan) Classic Bike Show and Swap Meet. I definitely was not looking for another bike, but...here we are. A guy was starting to pack up his booth and asked me if I needed a Univega. I replied "Not really". Then he said "How about for a dollar?" How could I say no to that? The worst case would be that I sell it at the scrap metal dealer and get most of my dollar back. The frame appears straight, the dropouts are Suntour, and it makes a nice ping when I flick it with my finger. It has the tell-tale signs of being at least a decent road bike. I'm not sure of the model because all the decals that would provide any clues have been aggressively scratched off. Serial number starts with F, so it should be from 1977, made by Miyata. After a lot of Google searches and looking through old threads, I think it could be a Gran Rally. I believe I have everything I will need to put it on the road, so my goal is to do it with zero cash outlay. The paint is really banged up, so I might do a quick rattle can job before I build it up.

The Monroe (Michigan) Classic Bike Show and Swap Meet is just over an hour from my home. It was a good show before, when it was in Ann Arbor, but it is bigger and better in the new location. While some people might hear "fairgrounds", and think dirty barns and muddy walkways, this one looks more like a country club. All the buildings are clean and well maintained, the grass is trimmed, and the walkways are paved. It is well worth the trip if you are in the Midwest. I got to meet jjhabbs , who came over from Chicago.

That looks to be a frame for someone 6'3" to 6'6". Too bad it was dismantled so much and treated so poorly; but that is the point of this thread. Must post the resurrected bike when done. Should be a beauty!

It's only 23inches/58 cm CTT, so the same as my other bikes. I am only 5''8", but I have a 32 inch inseam. I'll be posting updates, but it might be a minute before I get started. I forgot to mention, I also found a correct size seat post in a box of free stuff that was left behind by a vendor when they went home. It was a good day!

As in Bertin, all original missing pedals, all French except the 3 tube Reynolds and Concor saddle, Vitus fork, Post size 26.4, simplex, Bellini stem and bars, Stronglight cranks bb and headset, Galli brakes and levers, Normandy Champion red foil high flange! The bearings all in great shape. The rims are good, however a hamm fisted lug head drilled out the presta to schrader, some rust on a few eyelets. The chain is sedis, one link was frozen. The link was eventually actuated to only sticky, then I undid the link and cleared the rust. Chain has no stretch measured.

I have not had a chance to look much at this one. This appears to have some updates, the bars are Specialized, the rd is Suntour GT-V, the cranks are Campy unfluted arms with a TA Specialties triplizer, the rims are Mavic.

Some of the presta valve nuts have a neck on them that fits nicely into those drilled out holes.
