How about one side orange and one side sky blue?

I love the idea of cloth tape done in an argyle patten.
Newbaum's Flickr page has some ideas. https://www.flickr.com/groups/189192...oto_5783217264

I always use plain hockey tape, we have plenty in Canada and it's very very cheap. It's a bit sticky so you have a very good grip. When the stickiness is worn down you just put another layer of tape.

Cheap cork (or cloth) tape and coat it with shellac. Go grant peterson style. I will vouch for this method (using cork tape) personally as it's awesome. It lasts and lasts (barring crashes) it's weatherproof, It's beautiful, looks like leather, wears well, can re-coat it with shellac when it gets scathed up. A tiny can of shellac will last you the rest of your life.

Classic cheapies are the hockey tape & old inner tube.
My most cheapie is on my exercise bike, pipe insulation wrapped with that blue tape they have in drs offices & ER's. We're talking real tacky

Go back to the 80s with Grab On foam grips? I actually have a set on my Gitzo tripod, but not on any bikes right now.

I couldn't agree more. I do this alot and the bonus is that they very, rarely slide down the bars. They stay in one place. But you WILL have to keep washing your hands for awhile but worth it. Toughens up the hands too

I bought a vintage road racer from an old time LBS. I was able to re-use the tape on the new bars I installed. And re-use it again when I changed brake levers. I was seriously impressed. I asked the proprietor of the LBS if he had wrapped the bars and if so what was the tape. He told me it was 'Peleton Tape'. I googled around but couldn't find it so I asked him to get me some. It is made by Avenir actually. Somewhere on the box it does say Peleton Tape but that name isn't prominent. The stuff is CHEAP. Like $9.99 cheap. It looks and feels exactly like leather. It is padded but the padding is very firm. The glue is very strong. I suspect Avenir is moving on from this product. It doesn't seem to be easy to find. I wrapped my Wing Pro bars in Newbaum's (black) cloth tape, and wear padded gloves. I am starting to really like the feel of cloth tape but it has taken a long time. Some people shellac cloth tape, but that is simply way more involvement than I want to have with my bike.

1. Baum means "tree."
2. Could I get them to ship to the UK, or does Rivendell/Newbaum have a London-based pick-up point?

Looks like shipping wouldn't be a problem except the inexpensiveness goes out the window: Lugged Steel Bicycles, Wool Clothing, Canvas Bike Bags & Brooks Saddles & from Rivendell Bicycle Works
Pedal Pedlar - Newbaum's Retro Cotton Handlebar Tape
I need not be so lazy sometimes.

Fizik Microtex isn't the cheapest tape but lasts forever, easy to clean and available in many colors.
