I thought someone had mentioned Dyneema, but lost the mention.
It is a very strong and light fiber.
A Carbon/Dyneema composite could be made with some more interesting colors than simple black, and could potentially be stronger, lighter, and more abrasion resistant than carbon fiber alone.
It's cousin, Zylon, had a fatal flaw... Yep.... actually fatal... it degrades in sunlight. Dyneema may also have issues with sunlight, and it is quite possible that if we see it in bikes, it will be entirely painted over, or be used as a middle layer in a laminate.

Speaking of new wonder material. I saw a GCN video last night of the NorthAmericanHandBuiltBike show, and they mentioned a new magnesium alloy and showed a bike built with it.

My thing is that I feel we're already reaching saturation on most things new age in weight, stiffness, aero, tire CRR, ergonomics, e-bikes........for me it would have to be something to be a true game changer for on-the-road bike riders to increase safety.
I'd like to see a Garmin Varia on crack.
To me, road going bicycle vulnerability is still a "last frontier" in possibilities. I wish auto makers and bike manufacturers would team up to give the equivalent of a "4-foot spacing" and "biker ahead" warning system involving auto braking or something. Like the Trek helmet has an on-board broadcasting sensor the car picks up on.
That, to me, would be a game changer. If it gave an audible a 1/4 mile ahead on country roads or for texting drivers that would certainly save lives.
They've placed themselves in a bad spot if it disappoints either "bike people" or the "general public".

Maybe we've been thinking about this all wrong. What happened in cycling in 1989? That was the year Greg Lemond had his tri-bike aero bars in the TDF, and Rock Shox was founded.

A couple of bikes have hit just about 10 pounds (depending on whether one includes pedals).
https://road.cc/content/feature/2116...otic-materials
Could Trek have broken the 10 pound barrier on say a $5000 bicycle?

It's 71F here in Seattle, all the spring plants are going off. The skiing was marginal yesterday, snow is melty and not firm enough to really glide on. Almost got a sunburn being out on it all day. It'll still be 2+ months until the most scenic roads are open though. I have two more weekends of groomed trails.

I'm certainly planning on NOT BUYING A NEW TREK tomorrow.
However, I think the OP was in the process of purchasing a new Trek, and put his order on hold because of this pending announcement.
Still, the whole thing, and all the hype and speculation is curious.
