Non Clip-in Shoes
Doing the GAP trail in a few months. Looking for a pair of shoes to wear for the trip. Using platform pedals and will stop in towns along the way and walk around. Was going to just wear running shoes but thought maybe something with a bit more solid sole? I’m 52 and don’t want to look a teenager with some crazy colors or such.

A lot of SPD mt. bike shoes typically have a removable cover over where you install the cleats.
If you leave the cover in place, they work fine as bike shoes that are stiffer than running shoes and yet are still comfortable to walk in and they work well on platform pedals.

Look at tennis court shoes, it's what I use. They have a stiffer sole than most other casual shoes, can take some abuse, and there are varieties with good ventilation (nylon fabric in the overall structure of the shoe).

Many of the SPD shoes come with a plug in the cleat area.
Although, if you use clipless, then I'd probably just go with SPD, or other 2-bolt recessed cleat pedals/shoes, if already getting the shoes.

I like my Giro Rumble VRs, in blue suede. I use them with toeclips and find them very comfortable for walking short distances. I just left the recessed SPD mounting hole section open. With these and my REI expedition bike / cargo / hiking shorts, I can easily accomplish most of my utility cycling, such as to a store or the YMCA.

DItto the Superfeet idea. Works great in any walking shoe. I use a light, mesh top trail runner from New Balance.

I've never heard of flat sole mountain biking shoes until now. Interesting.
Currently I wear Columbia low top hiking shoes on planned rides and will leave on my high top lace up work boots for unplanned rides after work.
I'm guessing these flat sole shoes are comfortable. How well do they stick to mountain bike type pedals?

Go to mtbr.com and the 50+ forum. Tons of people love flat/pinned pedals and shoes for the same, especially for hardcore technical mt. biking. The pedals have a bunch of adjustable pins on them to keep the shoe on the pedal. Easy to move your shoe around for different conditions. Lots to be said for this system, especially touring.

It sure is interesting how off road bicycle pedals are larger than road bike "pedals", but in the motorcycle world off-road footpegs are smaller than on-road pegs.

Cleats off after broken leg
Having broken my leg last year (unable to get my foot out of clip less pedal as the bike went away from under me, taking my left leg with it snap!) I just put the covers back on my Shoes and put MTB pedals on and so far so good...
