Coulee Challenge 1200
Started this morning. 85 riders started at 4 AM

I was looking forward to this ride but after trashing my Achilles on the cascades this year I didn’t get enough recovery in July to feel like I could finish it... and I barely made it through a 200k 10 days ago without some issues. I feel likey I would have done well, the climbing seemed similar to some of the hills we have here in Ontario. Also the overnights were all at hotels high is awesomefor me.

From little snippets posted to Strava: weather is hot but people seem to be having fun. The folks I know doing it are in the fast pack, and evidently due to the overnight setup it doesn't make sense to get too far ahead of things so they're having a real night's sleep. I'm guessing the slower end is having less fun with the heat.

I was surprised when I looked at the rwgps, the first day has them almost every 50km. It’s not bad with the heat and humidity to get riders to stop and walk around in the air conditioning for a few minutes. Not much need to carry a lot on the bike either.

in my opinion, 100km is the best control spacing on a 1200k. I prefer to find my own stopping points if needed. Looking at the route, there is no need for so many controls. The time stopped at controls adds up over such a long ride. If you spend 20 minutes at each control, which is easy to do, that's 5 hours.

got my jersey today. I think the daylight hours should have been on the back for visibility. It's a really nice jersey. Good thing it stretches, mine is a good fit for windy conditions (a little tight)
One rider said his hotel room on the coulee had bedbugs. I guess that means burn the drop bag.

there were more DNF's than I thought there would be (so far). Looks like a lot of people finished fairly early though. Including the couple that had two cracks in their tandem frame and had to get a replacement during the ride. They finished first.
