Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They just started making their own front derailleur for compact doubles.

Yeah, I know a regular front derailleur works perfectly in 95% of cases, but here ya go

I'm thinking about getting that one to go with the Gossamer Mega Exo crankset, but its pretty hard to find. I've found a few places that carry it, but unfortunately they take a while to deliver/ship.

Interesting. I was reading on that Campy site someone posted last week that Campy was releasing a Veloce Compact crank in AL due to all the sales they were loosing to FSA and that Shimano is doing a compact in 06 as well and will have their own compact FD to go with it.

It looks a lot like the IRD one. It would have been nicer if they did it in carbon I think.

Yes, this is FSA's first compact derailleur. The other choices at this time are Campy and IRD, and thats it as far as I'm aware.

Just placed my order for my Gossamer Compact Mega Exo and new front derailleur. My LBS said they may have trouble getting the FSA derailleur, so I may end up with the IRD instead--oh well, as long as it works properly. They said everything should be here by Thursday and that they can install it then or on Friday for me. I decided to go with the same crank length size, so I'm considering heading up into the mountains this weekend for a 3-gap ride, we'll see though.

When you swap out the crank/rings to go compact, do you have to drop the front derailleur? I can see how moving the clamp-ons would be pretty straight forward, but what about braze ons? Does moving the clamp-on leave a mark on your frame?

I believe it probably is best to move the derr down a touch, but I'm not real sure. It would leave no more or less of a mark than your bottle cages do being bolted to the frame, unless it was overtightened that is. As far as moving a braze-on, these are usually mounted using a slot that allows for some up/down movement of the front derailleur as well, so probably not all that much of a problem.

Yes, you need to drop it down a few mm to match the new chainring size. No, the clamp doesn't leave a mark on the bike (other than the dirt that was under the clamp that you could never get to before!).

Aw man, nice looking der. Where was that when i was building my wifes bike a few months ago. I ended up having to use a standard Centaur front der with my FSA compact crank I installed. It works, but I would prefer the CT specific der like this one.

How much are they going for?

Both IRD and FSA seem to be around $50 from what I've found so far.
