Your hands can get sweaty during rides and the traction most bsr tapes can provide, can prevent your bands from slipping off the bars, especially whdn you are going high effort and pulling at the bars. Hands slipping off the bars could most likely result in a bad crash......

I'm actually repressing the desire to put green Benotto on my green anodized Vitus 979. I desire Benotto for impure reasons.
First, vanity: yes, the metallic green theme. Second, envy and manipulation, because I figure it's easily-enough mistakable for a green-on-green Schwinn Varsity and I could use this to mess with the carbon roadies. They see Benotto, matching "paint", and non-aero levers, think it's easy meat, and when the road starts uphill it all don't seem so easy anymore!
That is, if my hands don't slip off the bars during this whole charade. God's punishment, perhaps?

Hey, I happen to like Benotto tape. I'm sad it's not made any more.
I'm not convinced bar plugs make a big difference. Sure you can get injured, but bar ends aren't the only hazard. You can even impale your thigh with a brake lever. I don't know how it happened, but I WAS THERE!
When I set up a bike for myself, I defer taping the bars to make sure the lever placement is right. I find it annoying to ride tapeless.

Never mind, that price a saw was for a whole of them. 🤦*♀️

My brother rode without bar plugs ... until a crash that ripped open his thigh. Took 22 stitches to close that gash - it was pretty gross.

Never liked tape - I switched to foam decades ago, and I would never go back. Only downside is having to remove the brake levers to install fresh grips, but that's not exactly brain surgery.
