The Rotor Doesn't Fit ?

I'm fairly new to bike repair and I just tried to change my disc brake pads. (I have Hayes Nines)...... At first they wouldn't fit at all (I ran the last pad down to metal) Then I took a butter knife and pryed the pistons apart. The pads are now in.... but the new rotors will not fit without slamming the wheel into place. Even when the wheel is finally in place -- it will not turn because there's no space between the rotor and the pads. Please can somebody help me -- I haven't got to ride my rig in a month and I would love to smoke one and do some urban riding tonight undefined. Also I have a big ride planned for tomorrow and there's no shops open on Sat in KNOX...TN.

P.S. -- Thank you to all. This forum has always been great.

Tennessee is gonna come home like a whipped puppy tomorrow night! Believe that. Dude Knoxville is a decent size town, there will be a bike shop open tomorrow somewhere in that town.

yes there is.remove the pads, then push the pistons back in all the way with a small wrench , then reinstall the pads, then pump your brakes with something thin like a razor blade or business card between the rotors and pads. this should set them to juuuuuust right. you may need to loosen the housing before you squeeze the lever to line everything back up. remember there is a break in period for the new pads.

pull the pads out and use a 10mm hex wrench to push the pistons back in on both sides.

Why would the size matter

I would use a tire lever as the pistons are ceramic and you face the risk of chipping or cracking them.

10mm is what hayes recommends. It fits on the outer part of the caliper perfectly and doesn't come close to damaging the nipple. Works like a charm. Or at least it used to, I don't ride hayes anymore.
