Head:
Psolar Helmet Balaclava under helmet
Torso:
MEC Quick-dry t-shirt, MEC Thick hooded sweater, MEC Windstopper jacket
Legs:
Pearl Izumi padded bike shorts, MEC Cylcone tights, with an MEC light urban pants over.
Hands:
MEC Lobster Claw gloves
Feet:
DeFeet Woolie Boolie Merino wool socks, Lake MXZ 300 boots
Weather:
8.6F (-13C) with 7km/h N winds, Sunny
Overdid the torso part, I should skipped the thick hooded sweater. Feet were ok until the end, where they started to feel slightly cold (40 minute ride).

Today I wore:
Head: REI Novara skull cap, Bell Ghisallo helmet
Torso: Patagonia lightweight poly l/s, Giordana l/s jersey, Nike wind vest
Legs: P/I Microsensor shorts, REI track pants
Hands: REI glove liners, Illuminite gloves
Feet: cotton sox, P/I Vagabond mtb shoes, Kucharik toe warmers
Conditions: 32F/0C, 92% rh, clear and calm, pockets of fog
Notes: The skull cap is really warm and it's always sweaty at the end of the ride, but my ears freeze. I might just look for a headband I can pull over my ears. Or cut the top of the skull cap, I guess. Also, my chin was quite cold. Although Mrs. Caloso may object, it may be time for the Return of the Chiva!

Today I wore....
Head:
Sugoi skull cap, Bell MTB helmet
Torso:
Lowe Alpine mock-t base layer, Pearl Izumi long sleeve jersey, Gore Windstopper jacket
Legs:
Cannondale padded liner shorts, Lowe Alpine base layer, Pearl Izumi Tokyo tights
Hands:
RoadRunner sports glove liners, Pearl Izumi Zephrr windblocker gloves
Feet:
Woolrich ski socks, Performance Bike Shop road shoes, Pearl Izumi Amphib booties
Weather:
22F (-5.6C) with 1km/h N winds, Sunny
21.5 mile commute to work. Ride went well, with core feeling pretty warm once I got moving. Base and mid layers were a bit damp once I got to work, but they dried out quickly when I put them on the fan, and used the hair drier (on cool) to dry out the socks and sleeves.
Head was fine - ears a bit cold, but not too bad.
Toes were a bit cold about 1/2 hour into the ride, but not uncomfortable.
Fingers were very cold. I've got to try something different in temperatures like this. It's supposed to be in the 50's when I ride home, so I will skip the base layer then....

Toned down the torso part, I was a bit uncomfortable at first, then I warmed up and felt just peachy.
I should've worn some glasses, as the snow was stinging my eyes.

Today I wore....
Head:
Mountain Hardware balaclava, spandex skull cap, Bell Ghisalo helmet
Torso:
Performance Century LS Jersey base, bibs, another Perf Century LS Jersey, new Gore Alp-X Paclite (gore-tex) shell
Legs:
Lycra Cycling shorts, poly pro thermals, BTwin full bib tight (poly w/light fleece lining)
Hands:
Poly pro liners and Swix windstopper lobsters
Feet:
45% merino mid-weight sock, Sidi Genius, Heavy weight wool work sock w/cleat cut-out worn OVER shoe, Louis Garneau oversize neoprene bootie.
Weather:
17F, dark, no wind, 4-7am
3 hour, 40 mile, training ride, tempo heart rate (LT minus ~20 beats) with ~6 little ring form sprints. Previous temp ride record 25 degrees. I was testing Gore's new Alp-X and the use of a sock-over-shoe insulation layer.
torso - Not cold, but chilled and somewhat uncomfortable...am thinking more layers and windstopper torso may trump fewer layers and gore-tex. Curious of others thoughts? The jacket interior was wet long after sprints, which were only 20-30 seconds ea. I don't sweat much and can say that ~290 grams of PacLite conduct the the cold right through a vapor filled base. need better loft, not heat. The jacket also has no netting.
feet - screaming success! If I hadn't over tightened the right shoe, i'd have been warm for 3 hours!
everything else ok/fine, accept for eyes tearing up and puffy post-ride.

Conditions: 39 degrees, clear, with a slight NNE wind to start off. It was 52 degrees when I got back home and I ended up covering 18 miles today.
Head: Headsweats tritech winter skullcap, helmet.
Torso: Champion midweight long sleeve base layer, long sleeve lime alert shirt, nashbar crossroads jacket which I later swapped for an illuminite vest.
Legs: Performance elite shorts, leg warmers, loose shorts on top.
Hands: Specialized bg short fingered gloves, windproof gloves ontop which I later ditched for wool gloves.
Feet: thin polypro sock liners, Defeet wooleator socks, cheapo low cut hiking shoes.
Notes: I used the jacket, windproof gloves, and a scarf for the first 10 minutes or so when it's mostly descents. When I got too hot I ditched those items for a vest and my wool gloves. Upper body and hands were comfortable, legs were comfortable, but my feet were cold after 15 minutes.

head: mountain hardwear windstop fleece cap, seirus face mask, helmet
hands: generic mittens w/added ducktape windbarrier
torso: t-shirt, polypro longsleave shirt, generic sweatshirt, columbia jacket shell
legs: dickies, underwear
feet: shimano mtb shoes w/ducktape, woolsocks
weather: 10F, light, slight western wind
Only went about 1 and a half hours. Torso got a little warm, but I was able to regulate by simply unzipping the shell. Feet started to get cold about thirty minutes in and never warmed up. Everything else was just key.

Head: Generic Earwarmers, none in the afternoon
Hands: Warm Mittens in the morning, no gloves in afternoon
Legs: Regular Levi Shorts
Feet: Reebok Basketball Shoes
Weather: Morning 15F neutral wind, Afternoon 39F minimal wind
It was warm today compared to other days this week, very comfortable ride. The inversion has been nasty though. This afternoon I got home and was sweating a good deal for 39F after 55 min. Shows how much the body can adjust to the cold weather. Haven't seen a need for pants yet this year. Maybe when it gets into the negatives.

Conditions: Clear, 15F, 10mph wind from west
Head: OR poly beanie, Windstopper balaclava, neoprene ear band. Whoops, with all this stuff on my head, I forgot my helmet!
Hands: Manzanilla windstopper liners, REI E1 mittens. Tips of fingers cold after about 15 minutes, but nothing swinging my arms couldn't cure. Drivers already think I am nuts, swinging arms doesn't really change that opinion.
Torso: poly long sleeve undershirt, Performance fleece jersey, Craft wind/rain jacket
Legs: poly padded boxers, poly long underwear, Bellweather windfront tights
Feet: poly sock liners, Smartwool ski socks, mtb shoes, Nashbar neoprene shoe covers
Supposed to hit 30F here (St. Paul, MN), so half this stuff goes in the bag on the way home.

NYC 18f, winds 27mph gusting to 45 (around 2f w/ windchill)
Well, finally got cold enough to whip out some winter stuff.
Bike helmet (pro-tec) w/ fleece ear-warmers
Generic lightweight thinsulate gloves (that have nylon external shell)
Cotton t-shirt, Patgucci expedition weight capilene top, and windbreaker
Wool pants (equivalent to mid-weight army surplus pants)
REI midweight wool hiking socks and regular workshoes
Warmth-wise, everything was fine except my toes were cold at the end of 1 hour commute. Shoes were fairly thin leather.
Jumping from 46 to 2 I think I did pretty well. I think I may buy a windblocking fleece or softshell top. Even though the shell is only water-resistant, I still steamed up a bit. When I unzipped to vent the wind blast froze the condensation.
Also, though my legs were fine, if it had been another 30 min. or a bit colder or windier I would have wanted some wind blocking on front-side or thin long underwear. I've been looking at some windblocker fleece tights as well.

Not today, but Saturday, when it was 25F with a wind-chill factor supposedly making it 18F:
Head: the spandex hood from my Performance hooded jersey. Plus helmet, of course
Torso: Hind sleeveless polyester base layer, Early Winters (by Sahalie) polypropelene Furnace Shirt, the above-mentioned Performance polyester hooded long-sleeve jersey, Performance something-or-other (Century? WindPro? I forget, it's really old) windproof fleece jacket.
Hands: Performance neoprene full-fingered gloves
Legs: Pearl Izumi Ultrasensor shorts, Performance Thermastat tights
Feet: thin no-name wool sock liner, thick InGenius Merino wool hiking sock, Specialized MTB shoes, Performance Toasties neoprene toe covers
Good grief, I must look like a walking advertisement for Performance!
(edit) Distance: 71 miles
SUMMARY: toes were still too cold; in hindsight I suspect the 2 pairs of socks restricted the amount of warm air that could circulate & perhaps I would've been better off with only the hiking socks. Likewise, my fingertips were unbelieveably cold for the first hour of the ride...until I pulled the gloves out 0.25", which allowed just enough air to circulate to keep everything happy. Might try my Louis Garneau polypro glove liners with some Thinsulate-lined ski gloves next time.
Probably could have lost the Hind base layer, or replaced the Furnace Shirt with a less-substantial middle layer. As it was, my core was plenty warm.
Nose ran like a bastard though.

Yesterday 35 degrees in early am when departed; no wind; 40 miles
Head: Helmet, ear warmers and thin skull cap
Torso: Craft base tank base layer, thin long sleeve jzy; wool Giordana jacket (windproof in front only)
Legs: mid weight tights; thin Duofold undershorts
Feet: summer socks (forgot winter ones), chemical toe heaters inside; Sidi Genius Mega's (1 size large for cooler months), 2 pairs toe covers, 1 pair thin slipstream full booties over that
Hands: Pearl Izumi Amfib gloves
Result: Torso overheated immediately; everything else fine. My feet love this combo; heavy on the wind protection for front of foot, breathable for rest of foot. If I wear thick booties that cover the whole foot--> too much sweat which freezes and then toes freeze.
Head: Helmet, ear warmers and thin skull cap
Torso: Craft base tank base layer, thin long sleeve jzy; wool Giordana jacket (windproof in front only)
Legs: mid weight tights; thin Duofold undershorts

Today I wore:
Head: REI lycra skullcap, helmet
Torso: Patagonia lightweight l/s baselayer, l/s jersey, Nike windvest, backpack
Legs: P/I bibs, Hind running tights
Feet: cotton sox, P/I mtb shoes, plastic Safeway bag booties
Hands: two pairs of gloves
Conditions: 48F, rain, gusty wind.
Notes: I was really overdressed. After 30 minutes I had to stop and take off one pair of gloves and the windvest. I also ought to get a cycling cap for days like today rather than the skull cap.

Suggestion: Please list # miles ridden in description. There's a big difference between 10 and 60 miles at cold temps.

Conditions: 36 degrees at the start before sunrise, 45 degrees 1.5ish hours later. It was clear with a breeze out of the SSE. I covered 20 miles today.
Head: Headsweats winter tritech skullcap, helmet.
Torso: C9 Midweight longsleeve baselayer, lime green alert shirt, nashbar crossroads jacket.
Legs: Performance century shorts, loose shorts on top, leg warmers.
Feet: Defeet wooleator socks, cheapo hiking shoes, toe covers.
Hands: Thinsulate gloves (fleece lining, wool outer shell) I got as an early Christmas present.
Notes: The most comfortable winter ride I have been on to date. The thinsulate gloves and the toe covers made a gigantic difference in comfort. The only part of my body that got cold were the heels of my feet.

It's still too early (and mild) in the season for me not to screw up. I do this about once a year, and now I've met my quota. I wore too little - did not bring enough options in terms of clothes with me, and I paid the price. It takes me a few rides to get back into the swing of strapping on the cold gear!

Yesterday I wore:
Head: cycling cap, helmet
Torso: poly baselayer, shortsleeve jersey, windvest
Arms: armwarmers
Hands: poly gloves
Bottom: bibs, kneewarmers
Feet: cotton/poly socks, Sidi Genius, toe warmers
Weather: High 40s (f), calm, sunny
Notes: 30 mile out and back on the American River Bike Trail. The cycling cap is my latest purchase, and it's a big thumbs up. It's just enough to keep a little warmth in, but my head did not get too hot. And the brim is perfect for the low afternoon sun.
I took off the vest and gloves about a halfway through the ride. Very nice ride, probably my last of the year and a good one to end on.

Smartwool running socks

My fingers were numb at the end of my 2.85 mile commute. Everything else was good.
