The only reason i don't on my daily is because i haven't found a way to do so.

It's a full bouncer and the chainstay fork id filled with a baloon tyre, it weighs a fairly top-heavy 90 lbs, it has a huge crank, huge rear disc brake, trailer hitch, and so it can neither take a single or twin leg stand. It's hard enough just holding the thing, no kickstand is gonna do it.

Love the Pletcher kickstands on my shopper bikes and big-wheel 3-speed Ellswick petrol bike, and unbranded one on the Merlin 26in retro hybrid.

This thread is the equivalent of trying to talk politics. No one cares about your opinion, nor do you care about mine. And, no one is changing their mind.

If you like a kickstand, use one. If not, then don't. Neither way is right or wrong.

What are your opinions on the subject?

I use this kickstand. It only weights 40 gr.

(not my bike)

Considering this thread has been ongoing since 2004, three months is hardly dormant.

The only bikes I own without kickstands are the ones I haven't gotten to putting them on yet. I find that I often stop where there is nothing to prop up against. I do not like laying the bike down. I have found that if the stand is not holding the bike, or there is a problem while it is up and I am riding, something is not right with it. Either it is damaged or installed incorrectly. The one instance I have found that my kickstand will fail installed correctly in working order is when my panniers are packed on the back. Even then, as long as I make sure to balance it correctly first, the kickstand will work.

In my yute, I was anti kickstand. But now, with storing the bikes inside a one bedroom home, they come in handy. That and the cheap frames came kickstand plates- which is good in that I don't have an aluminum plate pressing on the stays. And ya know, if you file and polish the rather crude Greenfield stands, they look pretty sweet What?

Both of the only two bikes I have left have kickstands. One of the kickstands I had to build, as there were no good commercial ones that would work like I wanted.

A lot of bicycles aren't made for kickstands--but then again, a lot of people buy racing bicycles, put up with all their shortcomings as general-use bikes, and then never enter any races.

A bicycle is a mere toy, I change the bicycle to fit my needs. Not the other way around.

I ride my bike about 250 non-utilitarian miles a week, and I love my $10 center-mount Greenfield kickstand. Handier than hell when I'm setting my bike up for a 125 mile ride. My wrench skills are pretty awful, and it took me 5 minutes to mount the thing, and it hasn't slipped out of position for any of the 2500 or so miles I've had this particular one on either of the bikes it's been attached to.

6-8 ozs. of friggin usefulness.

What about a kickstand for fully loaded unsupported touring? I been riding 2 bikes, no kickstands but also now weight, attachments, additional gear... Is a kickstand ok for touring? No cities just countryside riding

My vintage Nishiki International has an OEM kick stand. They were common in the 80’s and earlier. And as some have noted in this thread, there seems to be a resurgence of them on certain types of bikes again these days. Don’t really see a problem with kick stands. If your bike is designed to accept one and you don’t mind the extra weight, then mount one and enjoy.

It prevented the dreaded wheel turn as your bike was leaning without a kickstand. Rhode Gear has some decent ideas. I still have a Rhode Gear bottle with the delrin wedge mount. Unfortunately sized for 1970s standard frame tubes only.

For riding and parking the bike, I lay it down or hook it over a bar and carry a velcro pants leg strap or toeclip strap looped through the spokes and triangle to keep the wheel pointed straight when leaning the bike when loaded with full bottles and handlebar bag.

Then again, it is important if what each person does works for them?

Kickstands have come a long way. The newer ones have a place in touring.

...and it's now a tandem, 5ins suspension both ends so a pedal to the kerb rarely works, and weighs 117 lbs. Suggestions welcome, though.

I wouldn't put a kickstand on a carbon bike or a fancy high end steel racing bike, but for utility bikes, touring bikes etc, I regard them as a must have item.
