I wear cycling shorts just about any time I'm on a bike. Usually, I pair that with a wicking athletic shirt (really cheap at wally world).

I just got cycling legwarmers in the mail (one week late damn UPS) so I can do rides in the cold (I really got them for commuting) a bit more comfortably.

Tried to cover my crotchal region in this picture with my shirt (regular cotton shirt, not a cycling jersey or wicking tshirt).



On a group ride a few weeks ago (when it was warmer and when I was borrowing a friend's CX bike):

I ride to go to work and run errands, such as shopping or hitting the local cafe, so I ride in jeans, Carhartt, or whatever I'm wearing that day. If headed to work, I wear synthetic wicking shirts during the ride usually and change shirts in the bathroom stall.

The shirts are not cycling specific, just polyester base layer; if anything they are probably mountaineering or ski gear from Mountain Hardwear, Marmot, Helly Hansen, Columbia, etc. I have really nice a Helly Hansen "mid-layer" I bought on clearance that's quite a bit thicker that I use for cooler weather since it's just the right amount of insulation and doesn't completely block the wind. Other times I use my thin lightweight softshell instead of the HH midlayer.

Even if it's warm out, I tend to wear my long sleeve base layers if that's all I am wearing on top. I do that because it's rated UPF 50 and I can skip the sunblock.

I just picked up a couple merino sweaters from Costco for $20 each tonight. Not crazy about the v-neck, but I think they'll work pretty well for cycling. Merino wool is awesome because it's not scratchy, drys quick, keeps you warm without overheating, and keeps warmth even when wet.

I have a pair of loose cycling shorts with liner but I don't use them often since most rides are not recreational.

Just picked up a Louis Garneau bib with free jersey from realcyclist.com a couple weeks ago for about 116 for the pair. Helluva deal couldn't beat it anywhere. I was kind of worried when ordering but glad I stuck with the purchase cause they are oh so comfy. I had been riding with just some cheaper cycling shorts and lighter cotton tees prior. I always thought the better made cycling gear was a rip-off but I am thinking different now.

Only thing I tend to change between road and hybrid are my shoes and my jersey...i tend to wear a t-shirt/whatever on the hybrid cos I don't tend to ride much past 90mins on the hybrid so i don't need pockets to carry gels and food.

It depends on the distance and the intensity. If I'm riding alone and I plan for over ten miles, then I'll definitely wear biking shorts with a chamois pad. If I'm out for a leisurely spin with the wife and kiddo, then just regular shorts and underwear. I'm not breaking a sweat then.

For shirts, I'll wear a bike shirt for my solo rides for the pockets and zip front, but usually just a technical cloth T shirt other times (C-9's by Champion from Target). Regardless of which one, they'll all bright neon yellows and greens, or bright red, all for the sake of being visible.

I also wear the C-9 shirt from Target (white, yellow, hi-vis green, red). Cycling shorts no matter whether I'm riding street (med. to long distance) or singletrack, except with singletrack I also wear some cargo shorts over the cycling shorts for added abrasion protection from the trees.

Pearl Izumi shorts and whatever jersey I can get below $40.00. I also wear Nike, UA or C9 stay dry shirts. Anything that is comfortable. Bibs are very uncomfortable for me and I don't see the point in getting kits when no one is sponsoring me for anything,

Bingo. Family rides are casual, anything goes. Helmet, gloves and cycling shoes if the pedals on the bike I choose require them.

Otherwise I am going to be in cycling shorts or tights. I do have one pair of liner shorts that I put under regular shorts if it's a longer casual ride. I try not to spend a gazillion dollars on clothes so I watch for sales from the big cycling webstores like Nashbar. I don't like legwarmers but some do. Leg and arm warmers are great if you actually get hot enough to remove them and stuff in your jersey pocket or seat bag. If you're wearing them the whole ride then you probably would be better off with tights. It's definitely personal preference, but I get that arm & leg warmers are cheaper than having shorts and tights both. (In fact, I own arm warmers.)

I have a vented windbreaker that I wear when it's below 50, or 55ish with strong north wind. It's also packable and I have taken it off during a long ride or if I misjudge the weather.

I wear fingerless gloves to 60, and lightweight but non-vented full gloves to about 50ish. Then I get heavier gloves. Currently my heavier gloves aren't anything specifically intended for cycling and they are fine.

Finally, on my head I wear a thin headband or skullcap to contain sweat especially in the worst of summer. As it gets colder this switches to first to a thermal cap and then finally to a thin silk balaclava.

Somewhere below 35-40, you will find me in shorts and t-shirt inside on my trainer.

Cotton spandex shorts and a Tank top usually. I have wind pants and a matching wind breaker & ear muffs for those cool mornings

warm weather///padded bib shorts and a jersey. full fingered gloves, cycling cap under the helmet.

cold months//long padded bib tights and a long sleeve "coldgear compression shirt" on under the jersey then either a nylon vest or jacket.

Really cold rides///add shoe covers, and swap out the cycling cap for a thin winter hat or balaclava.
