Counterfeit tires online...

Hi everyone,

I keep hearing stories about some people with a certain tire model having great performance, and some with the same tires doing lousy.

The issue was raised that maybe some online sellers are purveying counterfeit copies. Anyone know if this could be true?
I guess stickng with the LBS is the best bet to make sure you are getting the real thing?

doubt it
where is the profit?

more likely the problem with the reports is
a. unrealistic expectations and
b. uninformed opinions

When I had my bike shop I was struck by the strongly held and mutually exclusive opinions people held about various brands of tires. Name any brand of tire and you'll find people who love them and people who hate them.

The same thing is true of car tires. When I was researching replacement tires for my car I was struck by the wide range of tread wear that reviewers reported for the same tire model.

I think that product reviews have their place, but you have to take them with a grain of salt. I look at trends without putting too much confidence in any one review.

Issue raised by whom? LBS? Tires can be purchased from UK online sellers like PBK and Ribble for half the LBS price. This condition has existed for years. There may be some reason, such as importer markup, I don't know. I have not heard of counterfeit bike tires and doubt there could be much money in it.

To many variables to make a comparison.
Riders weight, air pressure, road/ trail surfaces, hard/light usage, weather, exposure to UV and age of tire to name just a few

On the MTB I use Panaracer Fire XC's exclusively. It is the tyre that works on our chalk and terrain. Always bought from the LBS and they were always the same. same tread- same weight and same performance. However I bought some online once that were far cheaper. No colour choice- they were all black. Got them and a different tread- different Logo- diffent feel to the rubber. Contacted the supplier and he told me that there are two countries that Fire XC's are made in and this was the lesser known one. Told him I was not happy and he refunded my money and told me to try the tyres F.O.C. I did and I could not tell the difference so I paid him again.
