suggestions for bar tape...
Hi!
I'm looking for bar tape suggestions that are more fun than serious.
Seems that my BSO bar tape is done after a year or so and a couple of drops and a super overfull faculty bike locker where bikes get jammed into one another.
Bouncing ideas around:
1. American flag bar tape (only doing one half of the bars).
2. Glow in the dark bar tape.
3. Random neon yellow.
Suggestions are welcomed as I've never done this before.
Also, bar plug ideas are welcome ... just thinking of jamming some Crémant corks in there ... have a ton lying around around as we get bottles for €1.80 each when we buy 20 cases at a time.
Opinions?

also, cheaper is better ... i'll try to retape the current bar tape and try to get another winter out of it, but it's looking doubtful

700-23 innertubes work quite well .. cut them lengthways after valve removal.. just may have to wash your hands, some, when you get there.

If you're looking for cheap and don't mind a 2 week wait, Chinese vendors have bar tape for about $2 shipped. 4 months in and it hasn't fallen apart on me yet.

I have bull-horn handlebars on one of my fixies , I use an old inner tube which I cut into a strip and then wrap my bars. I keep my bikes dark and stealthy looking, no bright colours.

Proper advice requires more information:
What color is your bike, including decals?
What color is your saddle?
Is comfort an issue?
When in doubt, black gel cork tape is my personal choice.

Those foam and cork tapes have been bad for me. They are shred prone. I don't get why they are so popular. Even the expensive brands seem crappy to me.
Oddly enough, I like vinyl tape. Remember Benotto tape? That stuff was great. I also like cloth tape. Newbaum's is excellent. I have leather tape on my Volpe, and it's fantastic but expensive. I should have tried leather tape long ago.

I've had the same experience as Noglider with cork-type bar tape: it's damaged really easily. I've switched to Fizik microtex. It's like synthetic leather. It costs $15 to $20, but I've still never seen it rip after over a year on two different bikes. They make it in many colors.

It isn't cheap, but I like Lizard Skin. Actually, for me it has been cheap. The first time I bought it, it was a celeste green color that the bike shop couldn't sell so they gave me a very steep discount. I ended up selling that bike, bought another one, and the wrap job on it sucked. My friend re-wrapped it for me, didn't charge me for the new bar tape.
I am also not familiar with AcidFast7's ride. I think he needs to post a picture.

Nevermind, I found your thread with copious pictures (https://www.bikeforums.net/commuting/...term-test.html). If you don't want to go black, I think you need to stick with that reddish color or go green. I'm not so sure any other color would look quite right with it. Corks would be just fine for bar ends. I have a buddy who uses champagne corks and they have lasted on his commuter for years.

Cheap cork (or cloth) tape and coat it with shellac. Go grant peterson style. I will vouch for this method (using cork tape) personally as it's awesome. It lasts and lasts (barring crashes) it's weatherproof, It's beautiful, looks like leather, wears well, can re-coat it with shellac when it gets scathed up. A tiny can of shellac will last you the rest of your life.

I tried Lizard Skins twice. Great tape, but life vs. cost provides a poor value overall. I've got some Sram stuff right now and it's ok, haven't had it long enough to know lifespan.
I think you should try glow-in-the dark...two colors in a Harlequin Pattern.

After looking at photos of acidfast's Gomango, I think the answer is purple. That is the only color that could make it look even more outrageous.
