One of the downsides of my new job is I don't get to listen to nearly as much music as I used to. Bit of a bummer as I look at how full my podcast list is and think about how many Discover weeklys I have missed on spotify.

Very nice. I liked it. But where has jazz actually gone since Miles?

I am beginning to think that he was so much of a genius that he might have killed the music he loved. Who could even attempt to follow what he did?

And Lucinda Williams is high on my list.

As for country I do like the really old stuff. Play me some Hank Williams and I am happy. And as a picker I love hearing Chet Atkins.

I have a taste in country classics myself, and tend to prefer the "outlaw" stuff - Willie, Waylon, Merle and such. I also dig me some George Jones and Patsy Cline classics.

RE: Jazz. From an innovation standpoint, you're probably right. Still, that doesn't mean that there aren't cats out there today who are just killing it, even if they're not really bringing anything new to the table as a genre. San Diego actually has a great scene for not being a big city and there are some small combos and regular gigs that I make a point of seeing every so often. Plus there's something timeless about my favorite format - the acoustic piano, bass and drums trio. Just a rhythm section essentially.

Ever heard of Snarky Puppy? Speaking of new cats... Sure, it's really just a re-iteration of Weather Report, which given Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul was born directly from the Silent Way/*****es Brew band and therefore owes itself to Miles. But still:


This one really highlights (one of) the keyboard player(s). He really goes off the deep end there, while still managing to make it tangible. Great stuff.

Yep.

I like Heavy Weather, but it is nothing remotely like a Miles album in terms of genius. I like it and it is good, but it is nothing like the beauty of Miles.

Damn, he was awesome. I have lots of his vinyl and I think I have everything on first pressing from B's Brew through at least On The Corner. I turned on some many people to his music when I was in college in the 1970's. They had no idea and thought that Led Zep was great. I introduced them slowly with a Tribute to Jack Johnson. Then I hit them with B's Brew and that blew them away. I held off on Kind of Blue for a while. It is lovely, but someone that hears that first might get upset with the later Miles stuff if they have a closed mind. Kind of like a "Why can't he play nice music like he did before?" kind of thing.

Got the 50th anniversary re-issue of Pet Sounds for Christmas. What a clean vinyl copy I got. Way nicer than the CD version I have. It POPS! It does help that I have a nice Grado cartridge from about 1980 and scored a new stylus for it on EBAY about 15 years ago. I like it way better than my back-up cartridge (Stanton 681 EEE) and my backup is pretty good.

After that I played some Miles Davis (a side of B Brew) and now listening to Buddy Guy, but on CD.

Yeah! That Cannonball take on Autumn Leaves is a famous recording for sure. The above Cal Tjader, while not esoteric in an absolute sense, is one of many tight little tracks and a bit of a personal favorite.

Kid got this rubberized BT speaker he electrical tapes to the TT of whatever bike he is riding.
Sorry about the sideways camera - but you get the point. I used to do that with a wired speaker as a yongue kid.

Got a ticket to go see another one of my all time favorite trance groups at the beginning of march. Super stoked.

Just bought the Yardbirds '68 double LP on vinyl.

Mostly of interest for historical reasons.

Having this and the Cumular Limit CD set allows me to hear highlighted all three guitar lines that Page played on Avron Knows.

The two versions of Spanish Blood on the new vinyl are worth the entire price which wasn't cheap.

And to think that I bought the Little Games album in stereo way back when as a cut-out for almost nothing.

Really diggin' this Guaraldi hot take on a Bossa Nova classic. It takes a couple minutes to get rollin', but once they do the rhthym section (read: the whole band) is cookin' with fire!

Since its all my nephew listens to, I've been brushing up on my rap game and listening to a lot of Drake. Unfortunately I can't drop any of it when he's here since all the good songs are 70% swearing and racial slurs.
