If it's an obsession, it's a good one to have.
An obsession isn't about enjoyment, rather the inability to distinguish the limit to what is healthy and what is not. Still, I'm not taking anything away from him as it is a remarkable accomplishment. I am in awe of his achievement, if not in admiration.

I question your lack of commitment. .

One person's obsession is another person's fun.

I'm semi-retired (which includes no work from around May through late-August) and have no desire to ride 3,000 miles in a month. I'm still racing -- and, to get faster, you need a variety of workouts (not just long distance) as well as rest days.

This week, I'm tapering down for a race on Saturday...Which means I'm getting faster by riding less.

I didnt retire to push myself to some arbitrary goal. While working the 47 years for the company I had goals, and it was always hurry hurry fast and do it now.

Now is the time to stop and smell the roses. But do keep moving, if you set you rust.
