Ride I will NEVER forget

On HWY 149 heading into Creede from the north there is a sandstone cliff situated on a 20 mph safe posted speed curve. Winds very heavy all morning. Just as I entered the curve a micro blast of wind drove dust and sand from the cliff straight at me. Visibility dropped to a few feet - I could not see the pavement. My exposed skin was burning like it was covered with fire ants. Making matters worse I knew there was an 18 wheeler behind me. Lucky me there was a gravel turn out just before the guard rail started and I managed to stop on the gravel even thou I could not see it. By the time I got disconnected from bike wind stopped. Needless to say I sat there for awhile thinking how lucky I was.

Glad it worked out for you. Sounded like the timing was perfect to throw you this demonic event.

I am going to spend a day or two in Creede this summer. What do you do there?

Glad you are safe, scary indeed. Hope I never see anything like that on the bike. Reminds me of spring in New Mexico.

If this is more than a fluke event, you may want to consider some goggles that will keep blowing sand and dust out of your eyes. Good thing you made it okay.

Glad you are safe! rollagain raised a good point - was visibility the issue? or did you get dust and sand in your eyes?

ATV riding in mountains is big, fly fishing Rio Grande, hiking, biking of course - if pretty fit and have MTN bike - Bachelor Loop is a super ride with tons of mining history sites to visit, kayak remote lakes - headwaters of river low this summer for kayaks due to low snow accumulation. Local community always has something going on. Link to latest current events Creede & Mineral County. Stop by Mountain Views RV Park and Resort Site 313 to visit. We are retired full time RVers and spend the summers here. Might even loan you our RZR.

Glad you made out ok. My most exciting wind event was riding through a dust devil.

They can be a lot stronger than you think.

Wow, what a generous offer. Thank you. We stay in a condo in Crested Butte Every summer. Leaving Crested Butte we visit other parts of the state. This year it looks like Lake City and/or Creede are in the works. I will have a gravel bike and a mountain bike. Does Creede have decent restaurants? Where would you recommend we stay?

Sorry for delay - all our friends are RVers (we travel with our own bedrooms) and everybody I asked had no idea on where to stay. Best I can do is this link. Creede Lodging.

Thanks. We are watching the fires. We'll make our final decision if a week or so.
