Got Straps!

Howdy, with skidding in mind, do I buy leather or nylon straps? My concern is the straps staying tight and of course durability. Also, Nashbar has these Power Grip straps. Any Opinions on them? Peep the link

I prefer leather to nylon. I had nylon straps but occasionally they would rub on my cranks, which frayed them pretty quickly.

I've had the same leather straps for about 8-9 months and close to 1000 miles, and besides some minor wear they are still good. Throw some proofide on them every once in awhile and they stay nice and supple.

I still keep a nylon strap in my bag in case I need it

Leather laminated double-straps are the way to go.

Do you know where I can get these online. Soma's online shop seems not to have them anymore and bikebiz doesn't have them until February according to their site.

The first straps I bought were leather Christophes. I broke one within 2 months. I've been running nylons for at least 4 months now and they're still going strong. Is this normal?...

I designed the ones that were in Urban Velo. Don't try to follow the link at the moment, though, as my site crashed. PM me if you want construction details (I really need to put it together as a PDF).

spend money on quality straps, even the new somas snap (from threads started on various fixed forums)

i have kashimax straps and honestly wet, dry, riding for hours on end, no stretch, no hint of breaking . that's just my personal preference.

I've been riding campy laminated straps for the past 4-5 months. They haven't delaminated despite heavy use and they don't stretch when wet. So far I've been pretty satisfied with them thus far.

if you're into fashion, buy expensive hipster trend. if you're into dorky fashion (?!), the power grips work well for me too.

A pair of "2 dollar straps" ripped apart from the rivets in 2 months. I'm not one to enjoy buying $100 Toshi doubles, but it seems that they do make a product that will last long enough to justify money spent.

This sentiment comes after my synthetic soma doubles exploded on me while riding. I am supposed to be receiving their 3rd version doubles, made of leather, in response to my previous strap failure. I'm hoping for good results.

I asked at my local 'track specialist' bike shop (and I don't mean 'fixie specialist', but 3rd generation/been there for 40 years type shop) and they said something along the lines of, "...we only stock Toshis because they're the best." That's good enough for me.

how long are toshi doubles?
and how long are kashimax doubles?

i'm thinking i'm probably gonna end up getting some new doubles since my somas are about to snap and i don't wanna go back to single strap. but i have big feet. i need a nice long strap, and it seems like every picture i see of toshis and kashimax they both look way short.
