Looking for a 1970 Schwinn shifter wingnut

I'm restoring a 1970 Schwinn Varsity 10 speeds bike from my brother. I have removed and cleaned all the components. Now in the process of reassembling it. I'm glad i have found this forum when i was searching for a shfter wingnut replacement. This is my first time rebuilding a bike. I'm looking forward to learn from your experiences and knowledge.

Does anyone has a Schwinn Shifter wingnut?

I don't have one to offer, however, I did get a picture of it to confirm that it is the one that you are looking for. If this is the one, the thread size is #8-32. You could get an 8-32 nut at the hardware store and get by until you find one. You might even be able to get a wing nut or an acorn nut, which would look better, but still not original.

I don't know if these come up on ebay, and if they do what the price would be. You might have to get the whole shifter assembly if you can't find just the wing nut.

Schwinn Stem Shifter from a Continental

The wing nut on mine looks and feels like zink. I've seen then with a broken wing when I worked in a Schwinn dealer. People would use plyiers on them to tighten them.

Check at a bike shop that had been a long time Schwinn dealer. It is possible that they have some (or one).

That is the Shift that I have. Thank you for the threat measurement and the suggestion for a temporary fix. I will followup on it.

Thank you

I have 2 of these shifters, complete. Make sure that all you need is the wingnut.

If the wingnut is all, send me a message with your address and name, and I will stick it in an envelope to you.

Since the part is not branded Schwinn, you can use a Huret part as a replacement.

Is this actually made by Huret? If so, my advice on the thread size is wrong. It would be metric.

Perhaps a M4 thread.?

Hi Kross57

Thank you so much for the wingnut. It fits perfectly on my shiftier. Here are the pictures of the bike, waiting for the handler tape to arrive to complete the restoration.

I have the same issue with a 1974 Continental II. Is Huret still in business? Surfed the internet and couldn't find a website.
