does the 500 use a different mounting interface than the other Garmin Edge computers?

To the OP, looks like just something fabricated by Garmin team mechanics. Kinda doubt it will see production. For one it's not going to work with the vast majority of stems.

And this would accomplish the same result , albeit not as elegantly.

If you had a stem like that it wouldn't take much to fabricate one. Buy a sheet of carbon fiber (or aluminum if your cheap. Cut to size. Glue the 500 mount on, and you've got it.
Heck if you're really cheap. Cut and fold a beer can.

I've found this one before. I just wish it wasn't so huge.

- Find a thin aluminum, plastic, or carbon plate. The plate would have to be L-shaped for a regular stem.
- Drill a couple of holes for the stem bolts and one for the Edge mount.
- Use a regular Edge 500 mount, clip the four elastic band prongs so it's a bit flatter and drill a hole in the center. You could keep the elastic band prongs intact if you want the mount to keep its original form.
- Use a flat bolt and washer to attach the mount to the plate.

Looks like the FSA, there's a bunch on ebay and some copycats that seem interesting:

Easy to make. You can buy cf plate at your a hobby shop for $20. If it's thin enough you can cut it with an exacto knife, if it's thicker use a dremel. Looks like they just countersunk a screw through the garmin mount into the cf.
